Class of 2018 invited to apply for Service Plunge
Members of the Class of 2018 are invited to apply for this year’s Service Plunge, which provides a select group of new students with the opportunity to create lasting bonds throughout their college career by participating in service projects, team-building experiences and leadership development activities.
Applications are available online and should be submitted by 5 p.m. Friday, July 11.
A yearlong commitment, the Service Plunge begins with a month-long “Get to Know Newport” experience, which includes one service or social activity each week. During the Columbus Day break, students retreat to a local campground for a weekend of activities.
Last year’s Plungers helped the parishioners of Trinity Church set up their annual pumpkin patch, volunteered at Fort Adams, participated in the presentation ceremony for Waterfire’s breast cancer awareness event, manned a water stop at the UnitedHealthcare Marathon, served dinner at the McKinney Shelter and the Salvation Army and completed a gardening project at Mumford Manor.
Sponsored by the Office of Community Service, the Plunge is facilitated each year by five upperclassmen. Current facilitators include Savannah DaCruz ’17, Joshua Ng ’17, Jasmine Ngan ’17, Morgan Rayner ’16 and Joseph Santa Maria ’16.
