Department of Music, Theatre and Dance plans Christmas concerts

The Department of Music, Theatre and Dance has several Christmas concerts on tap, including performances from the University’s choral groups along with the Newport Community Symphonic Band and the Newport County Orchestra.

Admission to all concerts is $8 for general, $5 for students and senior citizens and free for Salve Regina students with a University ID. In addition, faculty and staff will receive a complimentary ticket for the performance of their choice.

The Newport County Orchestra, directed by Vincent Mattera, will perform at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7 in the Casino Theatre. The orchestra is composed of Salve Regina students, members of the local community and advanced high school students. The program will feature the music of Mozart and Mendelssohn, selections from Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” and other holiday music.

The Newport Community Symphonic Band, directed by Peter Davis, will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8 in the Casino Theatre. In addition to holiday music performed by the symphonic band, the concert will also feature the jazz ensemble and the flute ensemble, which is directed by Deborah James.

The University’s choral groups, directed by Don St. Jean, will perform at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13 and Saturday, Dec. 14 in Ochre Court. Featuring the University Chorus, Madrigals, men’s and women’s a cappella groups and student soloists, the concerts will include Pachelbel’s “Magnificat in C” along with holiday favorites.

    I am wondering if the dates for the choral concert are correct. I believe Saturday is the 13th and Sunday is the 14th. Can you give me any more information?

      Hi Matt,

      This post from last December was the information for the 2013 concerts. The dates for the 2014 choral concerts are Friday, Dec. 12 and Saturday, Dec. 13. Full details will be posted on SALVEtoday as they are made available, but in the meantime you can call the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance at (401) 341-2295 for more information.
