Eight players representing four Commonwealth Coast Conference schools have been named to the 2013 d3baseball.com all-New England region teams, including two from Salve Regina. Catcher Dominic Di Sano ’14 made the first team, while designated hitter Tyler Colby ’14 made the second team.

The two Seahawks paced a potent offense that ranked 17th in scoring (out of 370 schools) in NCAA Division III baseball. Colby and Di Sano were 24th and 49th respectively in sacrifice flies.

Di Sano stood out among all catchers in the region, combining his defensive duties and handling of the Seahawk pitching staff with a productive offensive game. He ranked seventh in the league in RBI (34) while batting .354 with 13 doubles, one triple and three home runs. His .538 slugging percentage topped all Seahawks while ranking fourth in the conference.

Colby led the league in batting average (.420) with 11 of his 50 hits going for extra bases (10 doubles, one triple). He ranked 10th in the league with 32 runs batted in and scored 26 runs in addition to swiping 10 bases.

After winning its first two games in the conference championships, Salve Regina ended its 2013 season with back-to-back defeats to NCAA participants (Western New England University and 2013 champion Endicott College). The Seahawks finished with their second-most victories in a single season (29-12) while a 10-game win streak from April 13-22 had the squad picking up votes in the regional top eight poll.

Salve Regina’s study abroad scholarship program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go by supporting undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints. Scholarship recipients have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of other cultures, countries, languages and economies, making them better prepared for the workforce and leadership roles post-graduation.

Most applicants are eligible for the Study Abroad Endowment Scholarship, but may be eligible for others as well, such as the Jane Campbell Scholarship in Modern Languages and the Donaldson Scholarship (for students studying abroad in Spanish-speaking countries). Award amounts are distributed directly to the recipients’ Salve Regina account and will be used toward tuition. Funds are awarded on the basis of financial need, academic merit and students’ demonstrated maturity as responsible members of the Salve Regina community.

Award recipients will write a blog for the Office of International Programs while abroad. They will also make a formal presentation about their study abroad program during International Education Week in November 2014.

Applications for spring 2014 study abroad scholarships will be available online in August and due Oct. 1. Contact studyabroad@salve.edu for additional details or stop by the Gatehouse.

Vision

Due to changes in federal law, the plan no longer allows the purchase of over-the-counter medications such as cold medicines, anti-acid and pain relievers without a prescription.
Dominic Di Sano '14 has been named to the 2013 New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association first team as a catcher.

Dominic Di Sano ’14 has been named to the 2013 New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) first team as a catcher.

Also a first-team honoree on the Commonwealth Coast Conference all-league team, Di Sano represents the conference as its only selection to the first team New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association squad.

Di Sano stood out among all catchers in the region. He combined his defensive duties and handling of the Seahawk pitching staff with a productive offensive game. Di Sano ranked seventh in the league in RBI (34) while batting .354 with 13 doubles, one triple and three home runs. His .538 slugging percentage topped all Seahawks while ranking fourth in the conference.

Di Sano becomes the first Seahawk since Justin Collett in 2009 to be chosen to the NEIBA all-New England team, and 16th overall. He’s also the first Salve Regina catcher to earn the honor since Ryan Holleran had back-to-back selections as a junior (2002) and senior (2003).

Mary-Ashley Donelan '15, Chelsea McWillie '16 and Briana Williams '14 have been invited to participate in the prestigious National Education for Women (NEW) leadership program this summer.

Three Salve Regina students have been invited to participate in the prestigious National Education for Women (NEW) leadership program this summer.

Mary-Ashley Donelan ’15, Chelsea McWillie ’16 and Briana Williams ’14 will attend NEW Leadership New England, a five-day leadership training program designed to educate and empower young women and give them the skills to be part of the next generation of women leaders. The annual residential program for undergraduate women is hosted at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics, on the campus of Saint Anselm College.

The program includes workshops for students to actively develop leadership skills such as public speaking and networking, as well as presentations from politically active women throughout New England. Participants will also benefit from faculty-in-residence, a group of women public leaders who serve as mentors for students throughout their stay.

A business administration major, Donelan was encouraged to apply for the NEW program by her lacrosse coach, Jennifer Foster. “She said it would be good for my career aspirations,” said Donelan, who hopes to become a lacrosse coach or pursue a military career. “Through this program, I hope to gain confidence and leadership skills that I can use throughout work, school and sports.” A member of the women’s lacrosse and cross country teams, Donelan also works part-time at Destination: Chocolate in downtown Newport.

A philosophy major, McWillie was encouraged to apply for the NEW program by adjunct professor Dr. Donna Tocco-Greenaway. “I hope to meet some new acquaintances and gain insight from other young women’s experiences,” said McWillie, who hopes to attend law school and be an advocate for women. “I would like to take the leadership skills I learn while attending this program and apply them to my daily life.” A member of the Pell Honors program, McWillie hopes to become more deeply involved in student organizations during her sophomore year.

A political science major, Williams applied to the NEW program because she was looking to improve her leadership skills. “My hope is that I will get an opportunity to meet new people who also want to sharpen their leadership skills,” said Williams, who hopes to attend law school and practice criminal law. The current Student Government Association vice president, Williams is also an admissions tour guide and a student mentor.

The Salve Regina community celebrate the dedication of Walgreen Hall, honoring a $1 million gift from Kathleen B. and Charles R. Walgreen on the occasion of Brooke Julia Walgreen's graduation.

The Salve Regina community will gather during Commencement weekend to celebrate the dedication of Walgreen Hall, honoring a $1 million gift from Kathleen B. and Charles R. Walgreen on the occasion of Brooke Julia Walgreen’s graduation.

The ceremony will be held at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, May 18 at the residence hall that serves as the signature entrance to campus on the corner of Narragansett and Ochre Point avenues.

Brooke Walgreen on Sunday will be awarded a B.A. in psychology and in the fall will begin her master’s degree program in applied behavior analysis at Salve Regina. “Walgreen Hall has become a symbol of what our mission statement instills in all of us,” she said. “My experience at Salve Regina University has taught me how to reach my full potential and become the person I am today. This gift is a testament of my family’s ongoing support of me and my value for education at a school I will forever love.”

Saturday’s ceremony will include remarks from Chancellor M. Therese Antone, RSM; Dr. Janet L. Robinson, chairman of the board of trustees; President Jane Gerety, RSM; and the Walgreen family.

“We thank and welcome the Walgreen family as partners in advancing the mission of Salve Regina University,” Sister Therese said. “In the thoughtful naming of Walgreen Hall on the occasion of Brooke Walgreen’s graduation, the generous gift from the Walgreen family recognizes and supports the enduring vision of the founding Sisters of Mercy; a precious legacy which will serve young men and women well into the future.”

Designed by local architect John Grosvenor and built by Farrar & Associates of Newport, Walgreen Hall opened in September 2003 as “New Residence” to accommodate first-year students in suite-style living arrangements. Housing up to 11 students, each suite in Walgreen Hall shares a lounge/study area and bathroom.

The building also contains a wing dedicated to administrative office space for Campus Life, Career Development and Multicultural Affairs.

Six Salve Regina employees will receive degrees during Sunday's 63rd Commencement exercises, bringing a whole new meaning to the term work-study.

Six Salve Regina employees will receive degrees during Sunday’s 63rd Commencement exercises, bringing a whole new meaning to the term work-study. The employees are receiving master’s degrees and a certificate of advanced graduate study in fields ranging from management to mental health.

In addition to the employees listed below, Help Desk specialist Natasha Wurst will receive her MBA.

Marcus Calhoun, fitness center monitor

After three years of coursework, Calhoun will receive his MBA, which he pursued due to the reputation of Salve Regina’s graduate programs and the opportunity he was offered as an employee. Calhoun said he enjoyed “the interaction with the faculty and my classmates and the flexibility of class schedules.”

With his degree, Calhoun hopes to achieve increased responsibilities in the health and fitness field, to include management and leadership positions. He thanked his parents, former dean Thomas Sabbagh, fitness center manager Tom Blaney, fitness center coordinator Charles Haskell and classmate and friend Christine Hopper for their support.

Joshua Carvalho, systems integrator developer

After two years of coursework, Carvalho will receive his MBA, which he pursued to learn more about business and management for both personal interest and the opportunity to advance his career. Carvalho said he enjoyed “the opportunity to discuss interesting topics with my fellow students.”

With his degree, along with his hard work, Carvalho hopes to open new avenues of opportunity in his career. He thanked his family and professors for their support, along with his manager Richard Drolet “for all his understanding about how difficult it can be at times to juggle work and school.”

Nicole Ferreira, data entry specialist

After a year of coursework, Ferreira will receive her certificate of advanced graduate study in mental health. She had just completed a master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling and needed to earn the extra credits in order to pursue a license as a mental health counselor.

“The ideals and innovation of founding member of the Sisters of Mercy Catherine McAuley, in addition to the Salve Regina University mission, has supported my drive and desire to become a better citizen and contributing member of society,” Ferreira said. “I thank the University and its members as a whole, in addition to my family and other supportive individuals for inspiring me to be where I am now.”

Adam Gingras, assistant director of career development

After two years of coursework, Gingras will receive his MBA, which he pursued in order to demonstrate stronger critical thinking skills in his current role as assistant director of career development. “It’s been a rewarding feeling these past two years to be able to bring new skills and competencies to the table at work,” he said.

With his degree, Gingras hopes to make a difference in the Salve Regina community and progress in his own career within the University and higher education. He thanked his family, friends, Career Development coworkers, the baseball coaching staff and dean of professional studies Traci Warrington, “who convinced me to get my MBA.”

Kristine Springett, office coordinator, Department of Nursing

After two and a half years of coursework, Springett will receive her master’s degree in management. Springett took the majority of her courses online, which she enjoyed “mostly because as an employee working from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the thought of sitting in a classroom from 6-9 p.m. was overwhelming.”

With her degree, Springett hopes to be able to teach a course or two, adding that she loves working with the students. She thanked nursing chairwoman Eileen Gray, clinical and laboratory coordinator Candace Powell and most of all her husband “for putting up with listening, in depth, to me talk about each and every course I took.”

“I am so excited to walk across the stage on May 19 because not only did I earn my undergraduate degree from Salve exactly 30 years ago,” Springett said, “but I will be sharing my excitement with my daughter Amy who is also graduating from Salve this year with her undergraduate degree in business administration.”
