Film screening, discussion recognize Holocaust Remembrance Day
In recognition of Holocaust Remembrance Day, a film screening and discussion of the 2016 documentary “Defying the Nazis: The Sharps’ War,” directed by Ken Burns and Artemis Joukowsky, will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, April 24 in the Bazarsky Lecture Hall.
The evening is hosted by the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy in partnership with Touro Synagogue.
“Defying The Nazis” tells the story of Waitstill and Martha Sharps, a Unitarian minister and his wife from Wellesley, Massachusetts who spent nearly two years on life-threatening missions in Europe. The couple left their children behind in the care of their parish to help save political dissidents and Jewish refugees fleeing the Nazi occupation across Europe.
The post-film discussion will include:
- Michael Joukowsky, grandson of the Sharps
- Rabbi Marc Mandel, Congregation Jeshuat Israel
- Al Silverstein, Holocaust survivor
Those interested in attending are asked to RSVP at the Pell Center’s Eventbrite page. For more information, call (401) 341-2927 or email pellcenter@salve.edu.
