Salve Regina’s theatre arts program will open its 2012-2013 production season with Neil Labute’s “Some Girl(s),” which tells the story of a man who decides to reconnect with a handful of ex-girlfriends before he gets married.

The play will be presented at the Casino Theatre at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11 through Saturday, Oct. 13 and at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14. Tickets are $5 for Salve Regina students, faculty and staff, $8 for senior citizens, non-Salve Regina students and military, and $10 for adults.

Directed by associate professor Suzanne Delle, who will also perform the role of Lindsay, the play will feature Katherine Witschen ’14 as Sam, Helen Stamas ’14 as Tyler, Zoe Seavey ’14 as Bobbi, Brigid Sawyer ’16 as Reggie and Jonathan Olivera ’11 in the lead role as Guy.

With marriage on the horizon, Guy decides the time is right to revisit his most significant girlfriends from the past. He travels across the country to do so, and the play is set in a series of hotel rooms in the different cities where these reunions take place.

In Labute fashion, Guy’s odyssey traverses a line between genuine attempts at reconciliation and manipulation of women’s emotions, proving that men behaving badly, even with the most innocent of intentions, can cause irreparable damage. In the process, Guy presents both an outrageously funny and deadly serious journey through the heart of darkness that is himself.

A bird in hand is worth way more than that for researchers in the Department of Biology and Biomedical Sciences.

For Alexandra Igo ’13, it’s worth discovering whether a small tract of protected land in a busy section of Middletown serves as an adequate habitat for birds during their critical migration periods.

For Rachel Porter ’13, it’s worth showing researchers that it’s not just possible – but far more practical – to measure corticosterone levels by extracting feathers rather than blood in order to determine stress levels within bird populations.

And for Ali Muehlbronner ’13, it’s worth tracking and comparing parasite levels of both migratory and non-migratory birds in urban and rural settings in order to sketch conclusions about how disease agents are being spread.

Just before sunrise and unbeknownst to morning commuters on Valley Road, class is in full session on the 4.5-acre Sweet Flag property off Haymaker Road, town land protected from development by the Aquidneck Land Trust. Just behind the police station and a stone’s throw or two away from the BJ’s shopping plaza, this riparian buffer area serves as a wildlife sanctuary and a living laboratory for Salve Regina students.

Here, under permit by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service, Dr. Jameson Chace, associate professor of biology and biomedical sciences, has set up several mist nets along the Bailey’s Brook corridor in order to capture and study birds during the three-month fall migration season.

G. Wayne Miller, a journalist, author and filmmaker, is serving as a visiting fellow at the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy through Friday, Oct. 5.

Miller’s fellowship is to develop an initiative with the Pell Center known as “Story in the Public Square.” The effort, when launched, will celebrate the ethical use of storytelling in the public arena while exploring the topic more generally through ongoing research, writing and public events. His week at Salve Regina also includes lectures to three classes: Media Writing, Story in Documentary Filmmaking and Feature Writing.

“G. Wayne Miller is an accomplished storyteller whose work across media makes him a natural partner for us in this project,” said Dr. Jim Ludes, executive director of the Pell Center. “As a journalist, a filmmaker and an author, he has demonstrated a remarkable talent for using narrative to convey truths that are sometimes difficult to capture. We are thrilled to be working with him.”

Miller is a staff writer at the Providence Journal and the author of a novel, a short story collection and seven books of nonfiction, including “King of Hearts: The True Story of the Maverick Who Pioneered Open Heart Surgery” and, most recently, “An Uncommon Man: The Life and Times of Senator Claiborne Pell.”

Three documentaries he wrote and co-produced have been broadcast on PBS, including the Providence Journal’s “Coming Home,” about veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, nominated in 2012 for a New England Emmy and winner of a regional Edward R. Murrow Award.
