Nursing major Shannon Marro ’14 has received a prestigious International Studies Abroad (ISA) scholarship to use toward her study abroad program in Valparaiso, Chile, this summer. Marro will be participating in ISA’s program at the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaiso.

“I have been interested in studying abroad for as long as I can remember,” Marro said. “After researching study abroad trips in Chile, Peru, Spain and Argentina, Chile stood out to me as a clear choice both because of the program and because their culture is very interesting to me.”

Marro was awarded the Michaela Farnum Memorial Scholarship. She is one of more than 1,500 students participating on ISA study abroad programs worldwide this summer.

“Nurses with Spanish language skills are becoming sought after in our changing U.S. culture and I know that studying in Valparaiso will help prepare me for my nursing career,” Marro said.

An affiliated partner of Salve Regina’s Office of International Programs, ISA awards $60,000 in scholarships each year to students who are participating in its programs. In pursuit of its goals of enhancing cultural awareness and providing students with the independence and language skills necessary for the workplace, the Michaela Farnum Memorial Scholarship seeks to help those who may not otherwise be able to study abroad.

The Farnum scholarship began in 2008 and is available to students studying abroad during the summer. This scholarship is both merit and financial need-based. For more information, contact the Office of International Programs at (401) 341-2372.
