The Office of Career Development will be offering weekly career tips to encourage all students to stay on top of their career planning as the semester moves ahead. This week, we’ve got a couple of suggestions for things you may want to work on to help you reach your professional goals.

See our tips below, and as always please feel free to schedule an appointment with a career advisor through Handshake. We are happy to work with you remotely via phone or video.

Weekly Tips from Career Development

Tip #1: Revisit your Resume

A resume is professional marketing document you will need to apply for jobs or internships. If you haven’t already, now is a great time to revisit an old resume, especially if you are planning to apply to jobs, internships or part-time summer positions in the next few weeks.

It’s never too early to create a professional resume, and our career advisors are happy to help. Whether you are starting from scratch or just need to update what you have, we can help you highlight exactly what employers want to see.

Check out our Resume Guide to help you get started, then schedule an appointment to review your documents with a career advisor through Handshake.

Tip #2: Schedule an Informational Interview

Still not 100% sure what you want to do after you graduate? An informational interview is a great way to explore a potential career field and gather first-hand information about a specific kind of job, a company or an industry as a whole.

Talking with professionals in fields that interest you allows you to collect information that might help you decide where you want to work, what you want to do and what you need to do to get there. You can also learn an employer’s desired skills and competencies desired and use that information later to market yourself more effectively.

If you’re not sure where to start or what to ask, we’re here to help! Schedule an appointment with through Handshake and we’ll help you get started.

Each Thursday, SALVEtoday will provide tips for success as well as success stories of current students and alumni to encourage and uplift the University community during this time of remote living and learning. #salvesgotthis #salvesuccess
