Students help create and promote Salve Regina’s Giving Tuesday campaign through event planning class

Today is Giving Tuesday, and people across the globe are joining together in acts of giving as part of a generous holiday tradition. The Salve Regina community can be a part of the #HeartofSalve by making a gift to Salve Regina by Dec. 1 using this link.

What has made this Giving Tuesday even more special this year is that students at Salve Regina have helped to create and promote the campaign for Salve Regina’s Giving Tuesday through a partnership with Dr.Missy Varao’s MGT315 Event Planning and Facility Management class. Dr. Varao, director and chair of the Department of Business and Economics, said that having her students partner with the Office of Advancement to help promote Giving Tuesday was an excellent way for the class to learn about fundraising strategies, which is often a significant part of event planning and execution.

“The students already did a small component of the project, which was creating videos of them talking about Giving Tuesday, why Salve is important to them and why someone might want to give to Salve,” said Dr. Varao. “The part they’re doing now is sharing across their social media channels. They’re looking at basic methods that can entice people to give through social media, so we’ve had some conversations about … the ways and reasons in which people give.”

Brooke Meredith ’22 is majoring in English communications and minoring in marketing and sports management here at Salve Regina. She decided to take this event planning class because she is hoping to be an event planner, specializing in either weddings or sports, and has enjoyed being part of the Giving Tuesday campaign for Salve Regina.

“I learned that when people are brought together for a purpose, they can be powerful and make an impact easier than being alone,” she said of the experience helping out with Salve Regina’s Giving Tuesday campaign. “I also realized the power of social media these days, especially with COVID-19.”

Salve Regina is proud to join in Giving Tuesday as a global day of generosity, and the Office of Advancement encourages members of the University community to make their annual gift on this day. This year, the University is grateful to the Providence Journal Charitable Legacy Fund for offering a $25,000 challenge gift if Salve Regina earns 250 more donors by Dec. 1.

When donating, participants can designate what area of Salve Regina they would like their donation to go towards, such as an athletic team, a certain program or scholarships.
