Hurricane Sandy, the largest Atlantic hurricane on record, impacted much of the East Coast last month, with New Jersey and New York being particularly hard-hit. As a result, members of the Salve Regina community have organized two opportunities for students, faculty, staff and friends to help those affected by Sandy.

Dress down day/Mercy Relief Fund

A dress down day to benefit the Mercy Relief Fund will be held Friday, Nov. 16. The Mercy Relief Fund was created in 2006 by Salve Regina alumni, faculty, staff and friends to assist students in need of financial assistance in times of disasters or emergencies.

Stickers are $5 and are available in the Office of Student Affairs, located in Miley Hall, Room 118; the Office of Human Resources, located on the second floor of Ochre Court; and the Office of Student Activities, located in the Wakehurst basement. Student Government Association senators will also visit campus offices to sell stickers to faculty and staff.

All proceeds from the dress down day will directly benefit Salve Regina students who were most impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Click here to make additional donations to the Mercy Relief Fund.

Donation drive/Here for Home campaign

Salve Regina has partnered with The College of New Jersey’s Here for Home campaign, designed to address the needs of the college’s home state. The University will fill a U-Haul U-Box pod with donations and send it to The College of New Jersey to be disseminated to those most in need.

Members of the Salve Regina community are asked to donate the following non-food items:

  • Warm clothing, especially for children (new or lightly used)
  • Blankets (new or lightly used)
  • Batteries
  • Paper plates and cups
  • Bleach
  • Diapers
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Toiletries

The pod is located on Leroy Avenue just outside Our Lady of Mercy Chapel. The pod will accept donations between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays through Thursday, Nov. 15, and will be delivered to the College of New Jersey on Friday, Nov. 16.

Salve Regina students impacted by Sandy

The Office of Student Affairs would like to hear from students impacted by Hurricane Sandy to determine how to offer support. John Quinn, dean of students, is available to connect students with on-campus services and answer any questions. He can be contacted at (401) 341-2206 or quinnj@salve.edu.
