Award-winning writers to host public readings, craft talks
Guest writers in Salve Regina’s creative writing degree program, the Newport MFA, will present a series of public readings and craft talks in early January. A book signing will follow each reading, and books will be available for purchase.
All events will be held in Ochre Court. Reservations are strongly suggested at salve.edu/mfa-events.
Michael Ruhlman
Ruhlman will host a craft talk at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5. A food writer based in New York City and Providence, his latest book is “From Scratch,” a cookbook that explores favorite meals and reflects on the ways that cooking from scratch brings people together. He also hosts the “From Scratch” podcast. Ruhlman received two James Beard Awards – the 1999 award for magazine feature writing and the 2012 general cooking award for his book “Ruhlman’s Twenty.”
Dawn Tripp
Tripp will host a craft talk at 2 p.m. and a reading at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7. Her fourth novel, “Georgia,” is a national best-seller and winner of the 2017 Mary Lynn Kotz Award for Art in Literature. She is the author of three previous novels: “Game of Secrets,” “Moon Tide” and “The Season of Open Water,” which won the Massachusetts Book Award for Fiction. Tripp is currently at work on her fifth novel.
Marie Myung-Ok Lee
Lee will host a reading at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8 and a craft talk at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9. Her novel “The Evening Hero” is forthcoming with Simon & Schuster and her young adult novel “Finding My Voice” is forthcoming with Soho Press. She was the first Fulbright Scholar to Korea in creative writing. A current New York Foundation for the Arts fellow in fiction, Lee teaches at Columbia University, where she is writer in residence.
Francesco Sedita
Sedita will host a conversation with Ann Hood at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9. The publisher of Penguin Workshop at Penguin Young Readers, he is the author of the “Miss Popularity” series and is writing a graphic novel series called “The Pathfinders Society,” set to release this spring. Sedita and Hood will discuss the publishing world and answer questions from aspiring writers.
Chard deNiord
DeNiord will host a reading at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10. He is the poet laureate of Vermont and author of six books of poetry, including the forthcoming “In My Unknowing,” due out in February from the University of Pittsburgh Press. He is also the author of two books of interviews with eminent American poets: “I Would Lie To You If I Could” and “Sad Friends, Drowned Lovers, Staled Song.”
