A greeting from Salve Regina’s McKillop librarians
Hello from McKillop Library!
We want you to know that we are here for you during this health crisis, though our services have shifted to accommodate the closing of the library and to allow for remote work for our staff. Everything that you need to know about accessing the library’s resources and staff, along with information on the COVID-19 health crisis, can be found below.
Meet your (virtual) library staff
While the library is closed to all users until further notice, we have some amazingly dedicated individuals who are in the library, answering phones, completing requests for resources and processing new materials for the library’s collection. Most of our staff are now working remotely and are finding ways to connect with you through the library’s online chat service, email and phone. We stay in touch with one another through daily meetings, and we manage to have a little fun, too, with postings about what we are reading and watching.
Gretchen Sotomayor, Special Programs and Instruction Librarian
Hi Salve Seahawks!
I’m adjusting to working from home like many people are at this point. The upside is that I have seedlings started for a vegetable garden and I can hear the neighborhood children outside playing.
Please know that we are here to support you, and look forward to working with you in the coming weeks. Sending good wishes to you during this first week of online learning!
Alicia Vaandering, Education and Instruction Design Librarian
Dear Salve Community,
While we’re all a bit stressed as we try to adapt to a rapidly changing environment, it’s been so moving to see how we’re all still striving to support each other academically, professionally and personally. For me at the library, this has mostly taken the form of moving in-person services, like reference and instruction, to virtual ones.
However, I’m excited by new opportunities to use social media to more effectively communicate. I’m also going to be creating YouTube videos of myself reading children’s books to help support an education class on children’s literature, which I’m kind of geeking out about.
Resources for students during remote learning
COVID-19 Library Guide
Visit the COVID-19 Library Guide for information about updates to our services and resources, from connecting with a librarian, interlibrary loan requests, accessing new resources freely available this spring, COVID-19 resources and local news links, tips on self care and much more.
University archives and special collections
Follow the University’s archives on Twitter or Facebook for updates and information on accessing these rich, digitized collections.
Spring 2020 new e-resources
Many publishers have offered upgraded temporary access to their electronic resources to help students and faculty adjust to online learning. The library staff has tested these resources and added them to the library’s databases list.
Research & Writing Guide
Do you need help getting started with your research? The library’s Research & Writing Guide is a great place to find help with narrowing a topic, finding those books or articles that you need or outlining your paper. You can also find this guide in Canvas in your courses.
Requests for new materials
Mail delivery hasn’t stopped for us at the library! The library has been asked to order only faculty requests if they directly support a course offered this semester. We are continuing to purchase and catalog print materials that meet that requirement. Contact your library liaison to find out more.
Check out stories every Tuesday that showcase the world of academics at Salve Regina and how faculty, programs, departments and students are innovating with remote living and learning during Virtual Salve. #academictuesdays #salvesgotthis
