Mercy Mondays: A letter + virtual welcome tour of the Mercy Center
Dear Students,
Let me introduce myself. I am Father Scott, the new University Chaplain, and I am very excited to be here! I’m a native of Bristol, Rhode Island, and have been working in education since I was 21 years old. Just before beginning at Salve Regina, I was named the Administrator of St. Joseph’s Church here in Newport. While there, I’ve been seeing a slowly increasing number of people at Mass, which is encouraging!
With that being said, it’s my hope that the Mercy Center for Spiritual Life will be a place of encouragement for you during this upcoming school year. God has been a great source of hope during this time and will continue to walk with us on our spiritual journey. As I prepare to begin this new academic year, I pray that all who walk through the doors of the Chapel or the Mercy Center will find a place of respect, comfort, prayer, and hope.
Catherine McAuley, our patroness, lived a life of sharing God’s love with others. She did so in a simple way. She taught a spirituality that is rooted both in the practical concerns of our needy world and growing faithfully toward greater union with God (positio). Following in her footsteps, we are called, just as her religious sisters were, to be subject to “any alteration that place or circumstances might require (Correspondence, 161).”
Life during the COVID-19 pandemic has been a difficult time for many of us and has required many life-style alterations. The return to Salve Regina is an important and hopefully welcome step that will be filled with alterations and accommodations. I am sure you have questions as to how Campus Ministry Life will look, and this virtual tour will give you a glimpse of that.
Be well and stay safe,
Peace,
Fr. Scott
