Calling for nominations for the new Presidential Commission for Equity and Inclusion
Today is National Voter Registration Day, another reminder of the importance that all voices matter, including those who have been historically oppressed in the U.S. And while the election continues, Salve Regina believes that the importance of diverse voices are crucial here on its campus as well.
Recently, Salve Regina announced the creation of a Presidential Commission for Equity and Inclusion with the purpose of advancing the University’s Mercy mission by seeking wisdom and promoting universal justice. The commission will be a standing committee chaired by the president, and right now, the University is actively seeking nominees to fill this commission.
Nominations will be accepted through Monday, Sept. 28, and President Kelli J. Armstrong is asking for anyone to step forward to nominate potential candidates. Students, faculty and staff may self-nominate or nominate another member of the campus community.
Membership will require a two-year term and will consist of four faculty, four staff/administrators and four students — three undergraduates and one graduate student.
The commission is charged with the following duties:
- Regular review of Salve Regina’s policies and procedures to ensure that they promote the University’s values and Mercy mission and advance an institutional commitment to equity and inclusion.
- Review and recommendation of ongoing training and development for students, faculty and staff to foster a culture of equity, inclusion and support for all members of the Salve Regina community.
- Sponsorship of University-wide events and programs to promote deeper understanding of the systemic issues of social inequity and injustice and the ways in which a Mercy education calls each person to respond.
- Regular, ongoing data collection to monitor University progress on institutional commitments to equity and inclusion.
The membership of the commission will be determined through a combination of presidential appointments based on individual roles on campus and nominations/elections. Regular consultation with members of the Board of Trustees and alumni also will occur based on their expertise and the topics under review.
