Nursing honors society is hosting annual clothing drive for children
Salve Regina’s Sigma Theta Tau (STT) students are hosting a clothing drive to support Clothes to Kids RI. STT is requesting pre-packaged shirts, underwear and socks for children ages 5 to 21. The clothes must be new and pre-packaged due to COVID-19 safety precautions, and the donation box is located by the stairs in the O’Hare Academic Building. Students, faculty and staff can place donations into the box until Friday, Dec. 11.
Sigma Theta Tau is an international nursing honor society with nursing students from across the world that enables nurses to connect with one another and create an expansive network to further education and create a supportive community. The STT chapter in which Salve Regina and other New England schools are part of is called Delta Upsilon at-Large.
“Sigma Theta Tau is an incredible honor society, and it’s a privilege to be inducted into it,” described Kristen Medlicott ’21, nursing major and junior leader of STT’s Delta Upsilon at-Large Chapter. “This membership allows me to connect with nurses across the globe and to have access to continuing education throughout my career as a nurse. This society is full of brilliant nurses and leaders, so being invited to be a member was a true honor.”
Undergraduate nursing students are able to become a part of the honor society if they have completed half of the nursing curriculum and have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, rank in the top 35% of the graduating class and meet the expectations of academic integrity. Those inducted into STT are typically juniors, but they may still become members during their senior year. Currently, STT has 38 seniors and juniors from Salve Regina in its chapter.
STT works to conduct service projects every year, especially ones that correlate with the critical concerns of Mercy: earth, immigration, nonviolence, racism and women. While STT does an annual clothing drive for Clothes to Kids RI, the pandemic has changed the way the drive normally happens, according to Medlicott.
“As a way to continue with tradition and support COVID-19 precautions, we decided that the clothing drive would be a great way for both Sigma members and members of the Salve community to contribute to a greater cause while remaining socially distant,” said Melicott. “We did have to modify the donation process and request new, packaged items only. However, we are hoping to obtain many donations, which we will be able to provide to Clothes to Kid RI.”
