Students invited to workshop on lobbying, activism and advocacy

Salve Regina alumna Marisa León-Gómez Sonet ’15 is returning to offer a virtual workshop called “Making Change: A Workshop on Lobbying, Activism and Advocacy” to students interested in making their voice heard. The event will be held on Zoom on Wednesday, Feb. 10, at 4 p.m., and it is co-hosted by Office of Community Engagement and Service and the Office of International Programs.

During this event, Sonet will help student join a movement of hundreds of change makers all around the country who are using their voices to advance peace and justice. Whether someone is a long-time community activist or a first-time advocate, the skills-building workshop will give someone the tools to strengthen their relationship with their members of Congress and to advocate for the issues they care about.

Sonet is currently a fellow at the Friends Committee on National Legislation where she is the program assistant for the immigration and refugee program. She works towards a more humane and dignified immigration and refugee system that is equitable, compassionate, inclusive and flexible.

She has previously worked with the Chicago Religious Leadership Network on Latin America (CRLN) on issues regarding U.S. foreign policy to Latin America, human rights, immigration and social justice. Sonet also has experience working with the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation in Cape Town, South Africa, The Trust for the Americas, an organization affiliated to the Organization of America States (OAS) in Washington, D.C. and the Auschwitz Institute in New York.

Sonet holds a master’s degree in global affairs with a concentration in international peace studies from the Keough School of Global Affairs at the University of Notre Dame. She earned her bachelor’s degree in global studies and French at Salve Regina.
