Dr. Alarcón-Arana to discuss feminism in Spanish alternative music
McKillop Library will host its first faculty lecture for the spring 2021 semester, and this one is entitled “Feminism in Spanish alternative music: Mafalda.” The lecture will be given by Dr. Esther Alarcón-Arana, associate professor of modern languages, and it will be held on Thursday, Feb. 11, from 4-5:30 p.m.
Feminism continues to be such a taboo that even women are reluctant to be associated with it, and patriarchy is so ingrained in our culture that most people do not recognize its influence on the world because it has been both created and advanced by the dominating forces who want to continue their supremacy.
Dr. Alarcón-Arana examines how the Spanish music group Mafalda criticizes patriarchy as a system that creates a hostile world and how, through their lyrics and their sound, they call their public to action to subvert that system.
Dr. Esther Alarcón-Arana’s research focuses on Transatlantic literatures and cultures from the nineteenth century to the present, with a strong emphasis on Spain. She is very interested in issues regarding personal and national identities, different kinds of displacements and uprootedness, and feminism. She has presented her research at multiple national and international conferences and has numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and book collections. Her most recent publications include “Ni perdidos ni callados: la cultura participativa como reapropiación de la agencia en En tierra extraña,” published in the book “El cine de la crisis” in 2018 and the volume “Muerte y crisis en el mundo Hispano: Respuestas culturales” in 2020.
