Spring dance concert will take place live in the Casino Theatre
The dance program at Salve Regina is putting on a live concert, entitled “Spring Collection,” this upcoming weekend at the Casino Theatre. The showings for the concert are Thursday, April 15 at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, April 16 at 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday, April 17 at 2 p.m.
“At the beginning of the year, the students were grieving the loss of being on stage, and in the studio there just wasn’t a way for all 28 company members to be all together in person. The impacts were real — the students felt disconnected from one another, and then there were the challenges around making art in masks, socially distanced and without physical touch,” said Lindsay Guarino, associate professor of dance. “Despite many setbacks and disappointments, the students surprised me again and again with their resilience and optimism.”
The “Spring Collection” concert is a collection of pieces that would normally happen in separate performances and spaces during a traditional academic year. This concert is a blend of works by faculty and guest artists, along with pieces that were choreographed in DNC 401 Dance Composition, which would typically be presented in the dance program’s annual Student Choreography Showcase.
This concert is long-awaited after a year away from the stage, and it will give audiences the opportunity to see many different aspects of the dance program in one performance. The students spent the fall semester making dance for film, sharing their choreography in virtual concerts. While it was remarkable to see what the students created in those spaces, all the students missed the stage and the collaborative energy surrounding a live dance concert.
“They have adapted to circumstances we never could have imagined and were willing to make so many sacrifices just so they could keep dance centered in their lives,” said Guarino. “I’ll never forget the way they lifted each other up and cared for one another throughout this year — and now, seeing the joy they are feeling in these moments finally back on stage.”
The performance is free and open to Salve Regina community members only — faculty, staff and students — who do daily RAVE screening and are COVID-19 symptom and risk free. All audience members will be socially distanced and are required to wear a mask. Call the Casino Theatre to reserve tickets at 401-341- 2250. Walk-ins are welcome, but space will be limited.
