Community service opportunities: October
The Center for Community Engagement and Service is offering many service opportunities for students — both ongoing and ones that happen in the month of October. These chances for service include experiences like volunteering for the Newport Marathon Race, a Potter League for Animals annual event and a Halloween event at Norman Bird Sanctuary.

Ongoing Opportunities
Housing Hotline: Crafty Crochet Volunteers
Volunteers who know how to crochet or are willing to learn are needed weekly on Wednesdays from 1-2 p.m. to help make small stuffed animals for children in need. If interested or for more details, please contact Olivia McGowan at olivia.mcgowan@salve.edu.
Fab Golf Volunteers
Reliable and responsible volunteers with their own cars are needed for FabNewport’s FabGOLF program. Volunteers are needed to help weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-5 p.m., and they will be teaching middle school kids how to golf. Volunteers should have experience in golf or a strong interest in teaching golf. Volunteers who are interested should reach out to Orlando Peace at orlando@fabnewport.org.
FabNewport Art Volunteers
Reliable and responsible volunteers with their own cars are needed for FabNewport’s weekly art program beginning in the fall. Volunteers who are interested and want to learn more details should reach out to Orlando Peace at orlando@fabnewport.org.
Gods Community Garden Volunteers
Reliable and responsible volunteers with their own cars are needed at Gods Community Garden for winter harvesting. Preferred volunteers hours are Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. If interested in volunteering at the gardens, contact Linda Wood at lswwood@gmail.com.
October Opportunities
Saturday, Oct. 9: Newport Marathon Race Registration with MLK Community Center
Volunteers are needed to help Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center (MLK Community Center) at Easton’s Beach Rotunda from 11:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. with race registration. All volunteers must register online at the MLK Center website to secure a volunteer spot. Transportation is not provided for this event, as it is in walking distance.
Sunday, Oct. 10: Newport Marathon Water Stop at Ochre Point Ave
Volunteers are needed to help at the Newport Marathon water stop on campus at Ochre Point Ave from 7-10:30 a.m. Volunteers should dress for weather, as this event is outside. Volunteers are encouraged to dress in Salve Regina gear, as well as bring signs and music to cheer on marathon runners.
Sunday, Oct. 10: Newport Marathon Race Registration with MLK Community Center
Volunteers are needed to help MLK Center at Easton’s Beach Rotunda from 5:15-7:30 a.m. with race registration. All volunteers must register online at the MLK Community Center website to secure a volunteer spot. Transportation is not provided for this event, as it is in walking distance.
Sunday, Oct. 10: Newport Marathon Finish Line Boardwalk
Volunteers are needed to help at MLK Center at Easton’s Beach Rotunda from 8-11 a.m. with Finish Line duties. All volunteers must register online at the MLK Community Center website to secure a volunteer spot. Transportation is not provided for this event, as it is in walking distance.
Sunday, Oct. 10: Newport Marathon with Clean Ocean Access
Volunteers are needed to help Clean Ocean Access with dune protection and recycling for the Newport Marathon event from 5 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Easton’s Beach. Additional volunteers will help with litter removal along the running path shortly after the last runner passes. Volunteers can work in shifts, and they will need to signup online to secure their spot. Transportation is not provided, as event is in walking distance from Salve Regina campus.
Friday, Oct. 15 and Friday, Oct. 29: Bike Newport Bike Cleaning
Volunteers are needed to help Bike Newport prepare for their Annual Bike Giveaway by cleaning bikes to make them useable from 2-4 p.m. Volunteers are encouraged to dress in clothes they don’t mind getting dirt or grease on and to wear sneakers. Cleaning supplies will be provided at site, and transportation is not provided. Students should consult trolley schedule, and the address is 62 Broadway, Newport.
Friday, Oct. 15: Trinity Church Pumpkin Patch
Volunteers are needed from 4:30-8 p.m. to unload pumpkins from various trucks at the Trinity Church in Newport, Rhode Island. This site is located on the trolley line.
Saturday, Oct. 16: Gifts to Give
Volunteers are needed to help sort donation items at Gifts to Give from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Van transportation is provided. Pick up will be at Miley Hall at 9:30 a.m., return at 2 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 16: Pell Bridge Run Race Registration with MLK Community Center
Volunteers are needed to help with registration and packet pick up for Pell Bridge Run from 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. All volunteers must register online with the MLK Community Center website to secure a volunteer spot.
Saturday, Oct. 16: Pell Elementary Children’s Arboretum Volunteer Event
The Newport Tree Conservancy is calling helping hands to assist with caring for young city trees at Pell Elementary from 1-3 p.m. This botanically diverse group of trees were planted in 2017 and are known as the “Children’s Arboretum.” Tree care is a vital activity that will ensure the trees grow healthy and strong to provide shade, beauty, and learning opportunities. Experience is not necessary, but registration is required.
Sunday, Oct. 17: Pell Bridge Run with Clean Ocean Access
Volunteers are needed from 5-10 a.m. to help Clean Ocean Access with different stations during the Pell Bridge Run.
Sunday, Oct. 17: Pell Bridge Run with Boys & Girls Club of Newport County
Volunteers are needed from 5-8:30 a.m. to help Boys & Girls Club of Newport County with water station at the finish line. Volunteers should also register through Stacy Gonsalves at sgonsalves@bgcnewport.org.

Friday, Oct. 22: Confetti Foundation Birthday Banner Project
Volunteers are needed to help cut and string birthday banners in O’Hare Academic Building, room 160, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Volunteers will be making these banners for children who are in hospitals and outpatient clinics across the country.
Sunday, Oct. 24: Potter League for Animals Heart and Sole Event – morning shift
Volunteers are needed to help the Potter League for Animals with their annual event at Fort Adams State Park from 9 a.m. – Noon. Volunteers will be helping with various games and course monitoring. Volunteers should dress for weather as this event is outside. To register, email MadisonL@potterleague.org. Transportation is provided, and pick up will be at Miley Hall at 8:30 a.m., return at noon.

Transportation is provided, and pick up will be at Miley Hall at 10 a.m., return at Noon.
