Remembering Veterans Day, Catherine McAuley with celebration on Nov. 11

On Thursday, Nov. 11, the U.S. celebrates Veterans Day. On this same day, the international Sisters of Mercy community takes time to remember the anniversary of the death of its founder, Catherine McAuley, who died on Nov. 11 in 1841. Both military veterans and Catherine McAuley will be honored on Nov. 11 during Sabbath Time from 1:45 – 2:15 p.m. on Gerety Lawn.

The Salve Regina community is invited to remember and honor all people who have served in the U.S. armed forces in the past, present and future. This event is held by the Center for Community Engagement and Service, the Mercy Center for Spiritual Life and the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC).

Beginning on Wednesday, Nov. 10, from 4-6 p.m., volunteers from the Thompson After School Program will work together with students to place flags in a heart of remembrance on Gerety Lawn. On Thursday, Nov. 11, artful representations of flags will lead the community to the heart of flags that has been created on Gerety Lawn.

All are invited to write names of veterans and attach them to a flag on the ground in honor of those they love and care about those who have served, currently serve or will serve in the future. This time will happen during Sabbath Time from 1:45 – 2:15 p.m. on Gerety Lawn.

“Veterans Day is a day to appreciate the men and women who have valiantly served our country,” said Benjamin Cortes ’22, cadet battalion commander of Salve Regina’s ROTC. “No matter the capacity of service, it takes a special person to wear the uniform of the United States military. I cannot thank our veterans enough for upholding the values and morals our country represents.”

Please join the University in a day of remembrance on Nov. 11 and come to Gerety Lawn during Sabbath Time from 1:45 – 2:15 p.m. to gather as one community to celebrate of the transformational work of serving one another.
