The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for Newport County and surrounding areas, which is in effect from midnight Friday, Jan. 28, through midnight Saturday, Jan. 29. Heavy snow is expected, with total snow accumulations of 18-24 inches and winds gusting as high as 60 mph. Snowfall rates of 2-4 inches per hour are possible at times.

Due to the impending storm and in accordance with the University’s severe weather policy, Salve Regina will be operating under suspended operations for Saturday, Jan. 29. Offices will be closed, classes will be canceled and residence halls and the Miley Dining Hall will remain open. Only essential staff should report to work.

Students are strongly encouraged not to travel, to remain inside during the storm, and to be mindful of slippery sidewalks and roadways.

The University will provide ongoing updates through this post, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and salve.edu email. If necessary, the University will activate its Salve-Alert text messaging system.

Campus Services for Saturday through Sunday

  • Governor Daniel McKee has issued a Motor Vehicle Travel Ban on Rhode Island roadways for Saturday, Jan. 29, from 8 a.m. to at least 8 p.m. The Jamestown Verrazzano Bridge, the Mount Hope Bridge, the Newport Pell Bridge and the Sakonnet River Bridge are closed.
  • Safety and Security and the grounds department will be operating as normal. Please call Safety and Security at (401) 341-2325 for any weather-related issues.
  • The Salve Regina shuttles are cancelled for the evening of Saturday, Jan. 29. There will be no on- or off-campus transportation from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m.  The Salve Regina shuttle will resume on Sunday, Jan. 30, at 7 p.m.
  • RIPTA has cancelled all public transportation, including the trolly service, for Saturday, Jan. 29. Operations will resume on the morning of Sunday, Jan. 30.
  • The Salve Regina bookstore will be closed Saturday, Jan. 29, and Sunday, Jan. 30.
  • McKillop Library will close at 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 28, and reopen Sunday, Jan. 30, at 10 a.m.
  • Miley Dining Hall will be open on Saturday, Jan. 29, with the regularly scheduled hours of 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  • McKillop Library Café will be closed on Saturday, Jan. 29.
  • The Nest in Gerety Hall will be closed on Saturday, Jan. 29.
  • The Starbucks in Miley Hall will be closed on Saturday, Jan. 29.
  • Rodgers Recreational Center be be closed on Saturday, Jan 29. The gym will be opening up for team practices at noon on Sunday, Jan. 30.
  • Gerety Hall will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 28, and reopen Sunday, Jan. 30, at 2 p.m.

Sports Updates

  • Friday, Jan. 28 at 6 p.m. – Men’s basketball hosts University of New England (moved from Saturday at 3 p.m.)
  • Friday, Jan 28 at 6:50 p.m. – Men’s ice hockey plays at Curry College
  • Saturday, Jan. 29 – All events postponed and/or re-scheduled
  • Sunday, Jan. 30 at 1 p.m. – Women’s ice hockey hosts Curry College is postponed

Parking Ban in Newport

Newport has issued a parking ban from 11 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28 through 9 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 30. To see if a street is part of the parking ban, go to the city’s parking ban map. For any questions about snow removal, see the city’s policies.

The following streets are designated tow zones for emergency snow removal: Annandale Road, Bellevue Avenue (from Kay Street to Bowery Street), Bedlow Avenue, Bliss Road, Broadway, Coggeshall Avenue, East Bowery Street, Farewell Street, Friendship Street, Gibbs Avenue, Gould Street, Kay Street, Powel Avenue, Spring Street, Summer Street, Thames Street, Third Street, Warner Street, Washington Street, Washington Square, West Marlboro Street, West Narragansett Avenue, William Street and Van Zandt Avenue (from J.T. Connell Memorial Road East to Malbone Road).

Vehicles parked on these streets while the ban is in effect may be towed. Residents may utilize the Gateway Center, Mary Street and Easton’s (First) Beach parking lots free of charge during the parking ban.

Parking Ban in Middletown

Middletown has issued a parking ban from 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28 through 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30. No parking is allowed on any area street to ease snow removal and reduce accidents. Residents are reminded to keep their sidewalks clear for pedestrian traffic.

Storm Tips

  • The Office of Safety and Security is open 24/7. The best number to reach them is (401) 341-2325. If you are unable to reach Safety and Security by phone, notify your RA or area coordinator.
  • If you experience a power loss, contact Safety and Security. Emergency crews from National Grid will be on call during the storm and will restore power as soon as possible.
  • Charge your cell phone ahead of time. In the event of a prolonged power loss, this will ensure that you have cell phone usage.
  • You should never use candles, even if the power goes out.
