Field hockey team to “Play 4 the Cure”
Salve Regina’s field hockey team will participate in a “Play 4 the Cure” campaign when the team hosts Roger Williams University at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5 at Gaudet Field.
Members of both teams will wear pink shirts during warmups and hand out pink ribbons. The Salve Regina field hockey team hopes to draw awareness to breast cancer and raise funds for breast cancer education through this special game.
The Seahawks have established a secure online donation site with the National Foundation for Cancer Research. Donations collected throughout the contest and the post-game penalty stroke contest against the Seahawk goalkeepers will benefit the foundation.
“We chose breast cancer research for many reasons,” said interim head coach Tia Pydynkowski. “Many of us know someone who has or had breast cancer, and a previous member of our Seahawk family chose selflessly to stay home this semester to help a family member who is suffering from breast cancer.”
October is the height of the field hockey playing season in the United States and is the official Breast Cancer Awareness Month of the National Susan G. Komen Foundation.
The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2013 there will be:
- 232,340 new cases of invasive breast cancer
- 64,640 new cases of in situ breast cancer
- 39,620 breast cancer deaths
