Book discussion series continues with “Wise Blood”
The “Reading Christian Classics” book discussion series will continue Thursday, Oct. 24 with Flannery O’Connor’s first novel, “Wise Blood.” All members of the Salve Regina community, along with friends of the University, are invited to participate.
Considered a classic of 20th century literature, “Wise Blood” focuses on the story of Hazel Motes, a 22-year-old caught in an unending struggle against his innate, desperate fate. This tale of redemption, retribution, false prophets, blindness, blindings and wisdoms give us one of the most riveting characters in American fiction.
The series will continue throughout the 2013-2014 academic year, and participants are welcome to attend as many sessions as they wish. The remaining schedule is as follows:
- Thursday, Nov. 21: “The Great Divorce” by C.S.Lewis
- Thursday, Feb. 27: “The Return of the Prodigal Son” by Henri Nouwen
- Thursday, March 27: “Vipers’ Tangle” by Francois Mauriac
- Thursday, April 24: Assorted poems by Gerard Manley Hopkins, which are available by clicking here.
Discussions are held in the McKillop Library special collections room beginning at 6:30 p.m. and will last about one hour. Each participant should furnish his or her copy of the book, read it prior to the session and come willing to share interpretations or comments.
