Pick up free copy of IRC’s January read, which will coincide with MLK Week
The Inclusive Reading Club (IRC) will be partnering alongside Salve Regina’s annual MLK Week in January to celebrate topics around social justice. Over the past few years, a book has been chosen for the MLK Week Community Read that students, staff and faculty read to discuss.
Free copies of the book are being offered so that participants can read it over Christmas break. Copies of the book are available, while supplies last, at McKillop Library’s circulation department, through the Office of Multicultural Programs and Retention, or through Miso Gatehouse.
The Salve Regina community is invited to read “All That She Carried: The Journey of Ashley’s Sack, a Black Family Keepsake” by Tiya Miles for the MLK Week Community Read. This book was a National Book Award winner in 2021 for nonfiction.
“All That She Carried” tells the story of several generations of Black women who must confront their ancestral history of slavery and racism. In “All That She Carried,” historian Tiya Miles traces these Black women’s stories through archival records, objects, art and the environment to write a singular history of the experience of slavery and uncertain freedom afterward.
The IRC will be discussing “All That She Carried” on Thursday, Jan. 26, at 4 p.m. in DiStefano Lecture Hall in Antone Academic Center. To register for this event, go here.
Dr. Ikea Johnson
The meeting will feature special guest facilitator Dr. Ikea Johnson, assistant professor of English, communications and media at Salve Regina. Dr. Johnson’s research often centers around Buddhist and Kemetic liberty, and she explores comparative methods from literary, philosophical, spiritual, and cultural studies lenses.
Dr. Johnson often writes about topics like the socio-political history of African American discourse, Black-Orientalism, and contemporary African American and Womanist scholarship on Black spirituality and Asian religions. She also studies and teaches Afrofuturism, comparative literature, world literature and philosophy.
