Twenty-five Salve Regina students are studying abroad in spring 2023

Twenty-five Salve Regina students representing over ten different majors are spending the spring 2023 semester studying abroad. Spanning over two continents and nine countries, students have found numerous opportunities that excite them.

“This spring, we have students studying in Spain, Italy, England, Ireland, Hungary, Norway, the Netherlands, Australia, and France,” stated Erin FitzGerald, director of the Center for Global Education and Fellowships. 

Battling an ever-changing world and uncertainty due to COVID-19, many Salve Regina students faced difficulties in studying abroad over the past few years. In the recent semesters, Salve Regina saw an increase in those seeking the opportunity to study internationally.  

“In the fall 2021 semester, we had only two students study abroad for a semester. This past fall 2022, our office saw an increase to thirteen students, including two students who are doing an academic year abroad,” stated FitzGerald. “We are particularly pleased that many of our students, including a few seniors, have been able to achieve their dream of studying abroad …. their resilience, patience and determination has been admirable.” 

The benefits of studying abroad

The deadline for applying to study abroad during the 2023-24 academic year is Tuesday, March 15. 

Studying abroad provides students the ability to extend the classroom experience and gain perspective connected to their field of study. A semester in another country gives students the chance to understand a different lifestyle, make new friends and acclimate to the ways of another culture which can sometimes be intimidating. 

Sarah Kraus ’24 studied abroad in Ireland in fall 2022.

Sarah Kraus ’24, who is majoring in a European history with a minor and cultural and historic preservation, attended the University College Cork in Cork, Ireland, in the fall of 2022. She shared her point of view of adapting to a new culture in a post written on Salve Regina’s Study Abroad blog. 

“While some aspects of my adjustment were a bit more challenging than others, I’ll be able to turn those experiences into life lessons,” said Kraus. “Adaptability is definitely a skill that I have honed during this experience, and it will definitely come in handy not only abroad, but in my daily life.” 

Attend a study abroad information session 

Students are encouraged to start moving towards a study abroad experience with a Global Salve Information Session, which is the first step towards an experience abroad. 

During these 30–minute sessions, student global ambassadors review and highlight significant details about the study abroad programs. Through important insights and knowledge tailored towards prospective study abroad students, these ambassadors create the roadmap to making the study abroad experience a reality. 

Joseph Burgeon ’23 is currently studying abroad in Spain.

All sessions happen on Mondays through Thursdays at 4 p.m. in Drexel Hall, and they allow walk–ins or the option to sign up for an informational session.
