Football team making noise in the region
The Salve Regina football team is getting recognition from around the region after its impressive 4-1 start to the season. In the first Lambert Meadowlands poll of the season, released by the Eastern College Athletic Conference, the Seahawks are receiving votes in the Division III poll. Salve Regina is the only New England Football Conference team to be listed in the poll.
Elsewhere in the region, the Seahawks hold firm in the fourth spot in the New England Football coach’s poll. Salve Regina received two first place votes this week and is two spots above fellow NEFC member Endicott College, which is currently sixth.
Salve Regina set a new school record for total offense with 596 yards in its 47-26 win over Western New England University last week. On the other side of the ball, the defense limited a prolific Western New England offense that had been averaging more than 500 yards a game to 387.
The Salve Regina defense is among the best in the nation. The Seahawks are allowing just 243.4 yards of offense per game, the best in the conference and 13th in the nation. The pass defense is fourth in the country, allowing 125.6 yards through the air per game. Salve Regina has allowed 117.8 yards per game on the ground through its first five games.
After a short week, the Seahawks will travel to Milton, Mass., to face conference opponent Curry College at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18.
