Mercy Mondays: Upcoming community service opportunities in April 2023
As the spring 2023 semester approaches its end, the Center for Community Engagement and Service is offering a lot of exciting service opportunities for students in April. If a student hasn’t had a chance to do community service yet, they are encouraged to participate in the below activities.

April opportunities
Aquidneck Community Table (ACT) Gardening at Island Community Farm
Tuesday, April 4, or Monday, April 24
Volunteers are needed to help ACT from 2-3:30 p.m. for a spring garden cleanup at Island Community Farm. Volunteers should meet at the farm on Elizabeth Lane in Middletown for a farm and garden tour and weeding the food forest. Volunteers should dress for weather, as this event is outside.
God’s Community Garden Spring Cleaning
Saturdays on April 8, April 15, April 22 and April 29
Volunteers are needed from 10 a.m. to Noon to help with spring cleaning at the gardens. Volunteers will help with planting, putting up tarps for the season, to composting. Volunteers should dress in layers, as this event is outside and wear sneakers.
Aquidneck Community Table Gardening at Pell School
Tuesday, April 11
Volunteers are needed from 10:30 a.m. to Noon to help ACT at the Pell School Garden to prepare gardens for the spring. Volunteers should dress for weather, as this event is outside.
Dog Toys and Looming
Tuesday, April 11
Volunteers are needed in Gerety Hall, Room 201 to help create dog toys for Potter League and looming hats for Salvation Army. There are two time slots available from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or from 12:30-130 p.m. Volunteers are encouraged to be creative and crafty. Refreshments will be provided.
McAuley Village
Saturday, April 15
Volunteers are needed from Noon-1:30 p.m. to help with spring cleaning at the McAuley Village. Volunteers will help with planting, organizing and helping families. Volunteers should dress in layers and wear sneakers, as this event is outside.
Newport Rhode Race Plogging
Saturday, April 15
Volunteers are needed to help the Eastern RI Conservation District by picking up trash after the Newport Rhode Race marathon, ensuring that the course is free of trash and debris. Volunteers can choose to walk or jog 1-3 miles. First 50 ploggers get a free long sleeve dri-fit plog shirt provided by Revolution Wind.
Pell Elementary School Penny Carnival
Saturday, April 15
Volunteers are needed from 5-7 p.m. at Pell Elementary. Volunteers should dress for weather, as this event may take place outside.
Clean Ocean Access Beach Cleanup
Saturday, April 22
Volunteers are needed at Fort Adams from 10 a.m. to Noon to clean up the beach. Clean Ocean Access no longer requires sign up before volunteers arrive at cleanups. Volunteers may either sign up online in advance or show up at the cleanup and sign a waiver on site.
Annual Earth Day Seedling with Eastern RI Conservation District
Saturday, April 22
Volunteers are needed to help Eastern RI conservation District with their annual seedling event at Greenvale Vineyards.
Middletown Senior Center Garden Cleanup
Saturday, April 22
Volunteers are needed to help at Middletown Senior Center with a spring garden cleanup from 10 a.m. to Noon. Volunteers should dress for the weather as this event is outside. All supplies will be provided.
Newport Tree Conservancy (NTC) Earth Day Tree Planting and Mulching
Saturday, April 22
Celebrate Earth Day by helping NTC plant a young tree in Morton Park. Each tree that is added to Newport’s urban forest helps take carbon out of the atmosphere to help fight climate change. Trees also help mitigate stormwater runoff, cool the city and provide habitat for wildlife. Please dress for the weather and bring work gloves.
ACT Gardening at North End Community Garden
Tuesday, April 25
Volunteers are needed to help ACT from 2-3:30 p.m. at Garden Day North End Community Gardens to prepare gardens for the spring. Volunteers should dress for weather, as this event is outside.
