Three athletes earn conference honors
Three Salve Regina students recently earned Commonwealth Coast Conference honors. Jennifer Duggan ’15 was named the women’s volleyball player of the week, Billy Martin ’17 was named the men’s cross country rookie of the week and Victoria Varone ’17 was named the women’s cross country rookie of the week.
Duggan helped lead the Seahawks to a 3-0 week, including a win over No. 24 Roger Williams University in which she earned a double-double with 17 kills and 11 digs. Earlier in the week, she recorded a double-double in a 3-0 conference victory over Curry College with 10 kills and 11 digs, while hitting .381. Duggan then hit .500 in two sets against Rhode Island College in a 3-0 win.
Martin was the first conference freshman to cross the finish line at the Western New England Invitational. On the 8K course, he placed 28th overall in the field of 190 runners with a time of 28:18. Martin helped lead Salve Regina to a sixth-place team finish out of 18 teams in the event.
Varone finished the Western New England Invitational with a time of 19:20, which was good for second place in the 190-runner field. Her 5K finish, only seven seconds behind the winner, helped lead the Seahawks to a first-place team victory, their fourth invitational championship of the season.
