Newport MFA to host guest readings, film screening with bestselling authors
Bestselling authors and award-winning writers will participate in a series of public events during the Newport MFA in creative writing’s summer residency, scheduled for Saturday, June 22, through Sunday, June 30. All events are free and open to the Salve Regina community and the general public.
This year’s events include a film screening and discussion with Andre Dubus III; a conversation with Ann Hood, Dubus and Elizabeth Strout; and other guest readings.

Guest Reading by R. Tripp Evans

Ochre Court
Evans is a professor of art history at Wheaton College, where he specializes in American material culture. Trained at Christie’s London and Yale University, where he earned his Ph.D. in the history of art, he is the author of three books and the 2010 recipient of the Marfield Prize for arts writing. His most recent work, “The Importance of Being Furnished: Four Bachelors at Home” coincides with an exhibition of the same title at the Eustis Estate in Milton, Massachusetts.

Ruhlman is the author of nine nonfiction books, one collection of novellas and eight cookbooks; he is also the co-author with various chefs of 10 other cookbooks. Best known for writing about food, chefs and the work of professional cooking, he has also written for The New York Times, The New York Times Sunday Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Gourmet magazine and other publications.
Film Screening and Discussion of “The House of Sand and Fog” With Andre Dubus III

Join a screening and discussion of the Academy Award-nominated film “The House of Sand and Fog,” based on Dubus’s bestselling novel. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the author himself. Dubus’s nine books include the New York Times bestsellers “House of Sand and Fog,” “The Garden of Last Days” and his memoir, “Townie.” His most recent work includes a novel, “Such Kindness,” and a collection of personal essays, “Ghost Dogs: On Killers and Kin,” published in March 2024. He is also the editor of “Reaching Inside: 50 Acclaimed Authors on 100 Unforgettable Short Stories.”
Dubus has been a finalist for the National Book Award and has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, The National Magazine Award for Fiction, two Pushcart Prizes and the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature. His books are published in over 25 languages, and he teaches at the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
Ann Hood in Conversation With Elizabeth Strout and Andre Dubus III

Ann Hood, bestselling author and co-director of the Newport MFA, will be in conversation with Elizabeth Strout, Pulitzer Prize winner for “Olive Kiteridge,” and Andre Dubus III. Strout is the New York Times bestselling author of “Lucy by the Sea,” “Oh William!,” “Olive, Again,” “Anything Is Possible” (winner of the Story Prize), “My Name Is Lucy Barton,” “The Burgess Boys,” “Olive Kitteridge” (winner of the Pulitzer Prize), “Abide with Me” and “Amy and Isabelle” (winner of the Los Angeles Times Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction and the Chicago Tribune Heartland Prize). She has been a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award and the Orange Prize in London. Her latest novel is “Tell Me Everything.” She lives in Maine.
