Event to benefit Judith A. Keenan Scholarship
When faculty member Judith Keenan passed away in February 2013 after a valiant battle with cancer, she left behind a life lived with love for family, friends, colleagues and students. This week, members of the University community are invited to celebrate her spirit during a fundraising event for the scholarship that bears her name.
Established by her colleagues from the Department of Business Studies and Economics, the Judith A. Keenan Scholarship is given annually to a student who reflects Keenan’s philosophy of leading by example. “Judy knew the value of education and had an overwhelming joy and desire to help people learn,” said Dr. Arlene Nicholas, an assistant professor in the department.
To support the Keenan scholarship, faculty from the department have partnered with Alex and Ani to host Charmed by Charity from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 23 at the jeweler’s retail store in downtown Newport. Fifteen percent of all sales from the event will go directly to the scholarship.
Keenan had a long career as an educator, earning her master’s degree in information technology after teaching art for 28 years. She had been a member of the Salve Regina community since 1999.
“My family and I were greatly honored to receive this award, and we are also forever grateful for everything that Salve Regina has done as an entire university to benefit me,” said Anthony Cerino ’14, the first recipient of the Keenan scholarship (pictured above with Nicholas at left and President Jane Gerety, RSM at right).
