Four more to join Athletic Hall of Fame

Salve Regina will induct four more individuals into its Athletic Hall of Fame Oct. 3 during Fall Festival Weekend ceremonies. They are basketball player Tracy Giroux ’90, ice hockey player Chris Burns ’04, ice hockey player Kristin Suslowicz ’05 and administrator/coach Dr. Christopher Kiernan (posthumous).

The Athletic Hall of Fame committee reviewed the nominations submitted by various members of the Salve Regina community, and chose this year’s class to bring the total membership to 38 outstanding athletes/administrators.

The Athletic Hall of Fame’s annual induction dinner and ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3 in Ochre Court. For more information, call (800) 821-2343.

Tracy Giroux ’90

Giroux became the first 1,000-point scorer in women’s basketball during four consecutive winning seasons for the program. She led her teams to two Commonwealth Coast Conference championships and the first Eastern College Athletic Conference tournament appearance.

Chris Burns ’04

Burns became the starting goalie for men’s ice hockey early in his career and led the Seahawks to four consecutive seasons with double-digit victories. A two-time New England College Hockey Writers all-star, he holds all-time program records for games played as goaltender (69), wins (29), saves (2,029), saves per game (29.41) and shutouts (5).

Kristin Suslowicz ’05

Suslowicz holds the NCAA career record for saves among all Division III goalies (3,202), and her saves per game career mark (47.79) ranks first all-time in program history. She is one of only four goalies in NCAA Division III history to stop more than 1,000 shots in a single season (1,001 saves in 2004-2005).

Dr. Christopher Kiernan

Kiernan spent 27 years at Salve Regina as a faculty member, administrator and everything in between, from head basketball coach to second in command. His contributions to Salve Regina were innumerable, and include launching the NCAA Division III athletics program. Senior student-athletes with the highest GPA annually receive an award named in his honor.
