Three student-athletes earn conference honors

Three members of the football and women’s cross country teams recently received honors from the Commonwealth Coast Conference.

Football

Joey Mauriello ’22 was named offensive player of the week and rookie of the week after running for a season-best 160 yards and two touchdowns in Salve Regina’s 27-18 win over Dean College. He averaged 5.5 yards per rush, including a 50-yarder. Mauriello also corralled two passes for 31 yards in the air, giving him 191 all-purpose yards on the day.

“Joey has stepped in as a freshman and shown great explosiveness,” said head coach Kevin Gilmartin. “The future looks very bright for him within the Salve football family.”

Andrew Verre ’19 was named special teams player of the week after accounting for nine points in the win over Dean. He converted both of his field goal attempts, one from 23 yards and another from 28 yards, and went 3-for-3 on extra points. Verre also punted four times for a total of 155 yards (38.8 yards per punt) and pinned the Bulldogs inside the 20 twice.

“Andrew has been ice cold and automatic as a kicker for us for the last three years,” Gilmartin said. “It is great to see him continue where he left off.”

Salve Regina (2-1) hosts Western Connecticut State University at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22.

Women’s cross country

Christina Moran ’22 was named rookie of the week after finishing 99th of 318 runners at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Invitational, clocking a time of 20:28.9 in the 5K race and helping Salve Regina place 13th overall out of 45 teams.

“Chrissy has been a really pleasant surprise,” said head coach Rob McGuinness. “She has stepped right into a contributing role on the varsity squad, and I can see her continuing her development for not just this year but every year. A well-deserved honor for her.”
