Sunday, Oct. 28 update for students:
The most recent weather reports show Hurricane Sandy gaining strength, with winds strengthening beginning in the next few hours and lasting for many hours, well into Monday afternoon and night. As a result, it is likely we will lose power as soon as tomorrow morning. Our Area Coordinators and Resident Advisors are remaining on campus and will be able to assist you. The Office of Campus Life will also be staffed during regular business hours at (401) 341-2210 if you have any questions.
Please read the following information carefully:
- The Office of Safety and Security is open 24/7. The best number to reach them is (401) 341-2325. If you are unable to reach Safety and Security by phone, notify your RA or Area Coordinator.
- The University is aware that many students are leaving their residence halls to travel home, but please be advised that any travel tomorrow (Monday) will most likely be limited and dangerous.
- Any student residing off-campus who would like shelter on campus during the storm should contact Safety and Security at (401) 341-2325.
- Power outages will affect elevators, hot water, washers/dryers and other appliances. If you experience a power loss, contact Safety and Security at (401) 341-2325. Emergency crews from National Grid will be on-call during the storm and will restore power as soon as possible.
- Do not go outside during periods of high wind, and close your windows securely.
- Storm predictions include seas 25-35 feet high. The Cliff Walk, beaches and other spots near the shoreline are incredibly dangerous during storms like this and should be avoided.
- You should never use candles, even if the power goes out.
- Charge your cell phone ahead of time. In the event of a prolonged power loss, this will ensure that you have cell phone usage.
- Miley Hall, Wakehurst, the Rodgers Recreation Center and the McKillop Library will remain open, however during the height of the storm students should use extreme caution when venturing outside.
- We will continue to provide you with updates via SALVEtoday. Your RAs will also update you accordingly.
