Students encouraged to apply for new Jamaica service trip

Undergraduate students are encouraged to apply for a new service trip to Kingston, Jamaica, which will run during winter break in January 2020.

The trip will continue the Office of Community Service’s longstanding partnership with Mustard Seed Communities, an organization that works with local Catholic churches in the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Nicaragua and Zimbabwe to serve the needs of abandoned or orphaned children with serious mental and physical disabilities.

Founded in 1978 on the outskirts of Kingston, Mustard Seed also cares for children affected by HIV/AIDS and teenage mothers and their babies. Their highly developed program for volunteers is based on meaningful interaction with the children, tangible work projects and participation in an inclusive Christian community.

Applications are available online and are due by noon Friday, Feb. 22. Interviews will be held Feb. 25 through March 5 and decisions will be announced Wednesday, March 6.

The program fee of $1,700 includes round-trip airfare, transportation from campus to the airport, in-country transportation, seven nights lodging, most meals, project construction materials and 24/7 support from bilingual Mustard Seed staff.
