Positive youth development program seeking volunteers
Five social work majors have partnered with Newport’s Community Baptist Church to support its positive youth development program known as Friday Night Live and are seeking volunteers to assist with the initiative.
Through activities such as movie nights, fashion shows and bowling, Friday Night Live aims to create a safe and fun environment for youth in the Newport area. Activities are held on the second Friday of each month.
Seniors Alexa Beisel, Emma Buckley, Hope Vaughn, Amelia Vess and Sarah Young became involved with the program through their capstone course, which required them to design a social action project based on a need in the local community. The students learned about Friday Night Live through Vaughn, who spent her junior year working with Turning Around Ministries, a faith-based outreach program that shares space with the church.
As these five social work majors are preparing to graduate, they are seeking new students to volunteer with the program for the upcoming year. Volunteers will assist in planning the events and then interact with the youth during the activities.
Students who are interested in volunteering should contact Catherine Spreuil, manager of Turning Around Ministries, at ta_min2@verizon.net.
