Community service opportunities: October
Ready to log some service hours? The Center for Community Engagement and Service has a wide variety of opportunities available during the month of October.

Tuesday, Oct. 1: Soup Kitchen
Volunteers are needed at Emmanuel Church on Spring Street from 4-7 p.m. to set up, work and clean up the soup kitchen. This site is located on the trolley line.
Saturday, Oct. 5: Harvest Fair
Volunteers are needed at the Norman Bird Sanctuary’s Harvest Fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to help Clean Ocean Access staff composting stations, zero waste stations and an outreach table. Transportation is not provided.
Saturday, Oct. 5: Beach Cleanup
Volunteers are needed at Sachuest (Second) Beach in Middletown from noon to 2 p.m. to help Clean Ocean Access with a beach cleanup. Transportation is not provided.
Monday, Oct. 7-Wednesday, Oct. 9: Daffy Days
Volunteers are needed on various areas of the Cliff Walk to plant daffodil bulbs. Volunteers can work in groups of five and pick their own time to plant. Transportation is not provided.
Monday, Oct. 7-Thursday, Oct. 10: Fortress of Nightmares
Volunteers are needed at Fort Adams from 10 a.m. to noon to set up for the Fortress of Nightmares event. Transportation is provided – pick up at Miley Hall at 9:45 a.m., return at noon.
Wednesday, Oct. 9-Thursday, Oct. 10: Daffy Days
Volunteers are needed on the Gerety Hall lawn between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to pack daffodil bulbs in “Let’s Get Daffy” bags, which will be given to Newport residents during the Broadway Street Fair. Transportation is not provided.
Wednesday, Oct. 9: Birthday Packaging
Volunteers are needed from noon to 2 p.m. to help the Confetti Foundation organize supplies for birthday parties for hospitalized children. Transportation is provided – pick up at Miley Hall at 11:45 a.m., return at 2 p.m.
Wednesday, Oct. 9: Changing Table
Volunteers are needed at the United Baptist Church in Spring Street from 9 a.m. to noon to sort and package diapers for the Changing Table. This site is located on the trolley line.
Friday, Oct. 11: T-Shirt Project
Volunteers are needed in Gerety Hall, Room 201 from noon to 2 p.m. to make reusable bags out of recycled T-shirts for the Housing Hotline. Transportation is not provided.
Friday, Oct. 11-Saturday, Oct. 12: Fortress of Nightmares
Volunteers are needed at Fort Adams from 5-10 p.m. to help with the Fortress of Nightmares. Volunteers will work in scare teams and be placed to scare guests. Transportation is provided – pick up at Miley Hall at 4:30 p.m., return at 10 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 12: Broadway Street Fair
Volunteers are needed on Broadway from 8-11 a.m. to assist with vendor setup, parking, tickets and chalk art at the Broadway Street Fair. Volunteers are also needed from 6-8 p.m. to assist with vendor breakdown and cleanup. This site is located on the trolley line.
Saturday, Oct. 12: Broadway Street Fair
Volunteers are needed at the Broadway Street Fair from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 3-6:30 p.m. to assist Clean Ocean Access with zero-waste stations. This site is located on the trolley line.
Sunday, Oct. 13: Newport Marathon
Volunteers are needed at Easton’s (First) Beach between 5 a.m. and 3 p.m. to help Clean Ocean Access with dune protection and recycling for the Newport Marathon. Additional volunteers will help with litter removal along the course. Volunteers can work in shifts. Transportation is not provided.
Wednesday, Oct. 16-Thursday, Oct. 17: Daffy Days
Volunteers are needed on the Gerety Hall lawn between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to pack daffodil bulbs in “Let’s Get Daffy” bags, which will be given to Newport residents and businesses to plant throughout the city. Transportation is not provided.
Thursday, Oct. 17: Pumpkin Patch
Volunteers are needed at Trinity Church on Spring Street from 4:30-8:30 p.m. to unload pumpkins. This site is located on the trolley line.
Saturday, Oct. 19: Daffodil Giveaway
Volunteers are needed at Easton’s (First) Beach from 9 a.m. to noon to give away daffodils for Newport residents and businesses to plant throughout the city. Transportation is not provided.
Saturday, Oct. 19: Pell Bridge Run
Volunteers are needed at the Gateway Center in downtown Newport from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. to help with registration and packet pickup for the Pell Bridge Run. Volunteers may work in three-hour shifts. This site is located on the trolley line.
Sunday, Oct. 20: Pell Bridge Run
Volunteers are needed from 5-10 a.m. to help Clean Ocean Access with different stations during the Pell Bridge Run. This site is located on the trolley line.
Friday, Oct. 25: Fortress of Nightmares

Sunday, Oct. 27: Newport Hospital 5K
Volunteers are needed from 7:30-10:30 a.m. to assist with setup, water stations, registration and cleanup for Newport Hospital’s 5K road race. This site is located on the trolley line.
Sunday, Oct. 27: Taste of Newport
Volunteers are needed from 4-9 p.m. to assist with silent auction, cleaning tables, greeting guests and packing up supplies for Child & Family’s Taste of Newport event. Transportation is not provided.
