Committee seeks outstanding students for CLASS awards

The Honors and Awards Committee will soon be considering nominations for the Campus Leadership and Student Service (CLASS) awards. Unlike other awards that recognize community service, these awards are specifically intended to recognize students for their demonstration of leadership and service to the University community.

Students will receive their awards at the Student Affairs Honors Dinner on Wednesday, April 26.

In order to qualify for a nomination, the student should be recognized by his or her peers, faculty, staff and administration as an outstanding contributor to the cohesiveness of the University community.

Please take time to carefully reflect on the students you know who have demonstrated the characteristics described on the nomination form.

Please use a separate nomination form for each student and e-mail individual nominations to mckillok@salve.edu by Friday, March 24. Thank you for your cooperation and consideration in helping us recognize these worthy students.

Salve Regina’s French Film Festival is back with six award-winning films

Once a dearly-beloved tradition at Salve Regina, the French Film Festival was put on hold for three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The University is proud to announce that the French Film Festival is back with six award-winning French films for viewers to enjoy from Sunday, March 19, through Thursday, March 30.

The festival is open to the general public, as well as the Salve Regina community.

This year, the French Film Festival will offer a little bit of everything for its audience. There is a quirky comedy, an animated movie on refugees from the Spanish Civil War, and a lavish adaptation of one of French novelist Honoré de Balzac’s greatest novels. Films will focus on contemporary issues of diversity, inequality and gender identity, while also relishing a classic of French cinema’s legacy.

All six films will be screened on campus in the O’Hare Academic Building’s Bazarsky Lecture Hall. On opening night, a wine and cheese reception will be held after the first film, “Gagarine,” while the Sunday matinee, “Les Illusions Perdues,” will be preceded by a reception with pastries and coffee.

For the general public, admission is $15 for Sunday films and receptions, $10 for weeknight films and $40 for a festival pass. Tickets for individual screenings will be available at the door for cash or check only. To avoid lines at the door, patrons are encouraged to buy a festival pass online. Salve Regina’s students, faculty and staff receive free admission with valid Salve Regina ID.

Drama: “Gagarine”
Sunday, March 19, at 5 p.m.
Bazarsky Lecture Hall in the O’Hare Academic Building

Youri, 16, has lived all his life in Gagarine Cité, a vast housing project on the outskirts of Paris. From the heights of his apartment, he dreams of becoming an astronaut. But when plans to demolish his community’s home are leaked, Youri joins with friends on a mission to save Gagarine. The film was selected for the 2020 Cannes Film Festival and has won multiple awards.

Running time is 97 minutes.

Wine and cheese reception to follow film.

Drama: “Les 400 Coups/The 400 Blows”
Tuesday, March 21, at 7 p.m.
Bazarsky Lecture Hall in the O’Hare Academic Building

Neglected by his derelict parents, young Parisian boy Antoine Doinel skips school, sneaks into movies, runs away from home, steals things and tries to return them in a Paris of dingy flats, seedy arcades, abandoned factories and workaday streets. This was famed director François Truffaut’s debut, and he won the best director award at the 1959 Cannes Film Festival.

Running time is 99 minutes.

Comedy: “Mandibules/Mandibles”
Thursday, March 23, at 7 p.m.
Bazarsky Lecture Hall in the O’Hare Academic Building

When simple-minded friends Jean-Gab and Manu find a giant fly trapped in the trunk of a car, they decide to train it in the hope of making a ton of cash in this surreal comedy from director Quentin Dupieux. The quirky yet lovable film was nominated for and won several awards, and it was an audience favorite in France when released.

Running time is 78 minutes.

“Les Illusions Perdues/Lost Illusions”
Sunday, March 26, at 3 p.m.
Bazarsky Lecture Hall in the O’Hare Academic Building

This film is a sumptuous adaptation of Honoré de Balzac’s epic tale of a young provincial poet’s introduction to 19th-century Paris, where everything is bought and sold: literature as well as the press, politics as well as feelings, reputations as well as souls. This film premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2021 and won seven César Awards in 2022, the equivalent of the Academy Awards in France.

A coffee and pastry reception will begin at 2 p.m., and the film will follow at 3 p.m.

Running time is 149 minutes

Documentary: “Petite Fille /Little Girl”
Tuesday, March 28, at 7 p.m.
Bazarsky Lecture Hall in the O’Hare Academic Building

“Little Girl” is the moving portrait of 7-year-old Sasha, who was assigned being a male at birth but has always known that she is a girl. Realized with delicacy and intimacy, Sébastien Lifshitz’s documentary poetically explores the emotional challenges, everyday feats and small moments in a transgender child’s life. The film won a Silver Hugo for Best Documentary film at the 2020 Chicago International Film Festival, among other awards. 

Running time: 80 minutes

Animated Film: “Josep”
Thursday, March 30, at 7 p.m.

In February 1939, Spanish Republicans are fleeing Franco’s dictatorship to France. In one French-built concentration camp separated by barbed wire, two men will become friends. One is a guard; the other is Josep Bartoli, an illustrator fighting against Franco’s regime. The film was selected for the 2020 Cannes Film Festival and won Best Animated Film at the European Film Awards in 2021, along with other awards.

Running time is 74 minutes.

Salve Regina’s field hockey team recognized nationally with academic award

For the 16th consecutive season, Salve Regina’s field hockey has earned the 2022 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III National Academic Team Award sponsored by TopSticks. The Seahawks posted a 3.57 semester grade point average in fall 2022, and all 22 student-athletes earned at least a 3.0 grade point average.

The NFHCA National Academic Team Award recognizes programs that earned a team grade-point average of 3.5 or higher during the fall semester of the current academic year.

Along with team honors, twelve student-athletes were named to the 2022 NFHCA Division III National Academic squad. The NFHCA National Academic Squad program honors undergraduate college student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher through the first semester of the current academic year.

Ashley Lefebvre ’24 and Lauren Basteri ’27 join 468 other Division III student-athletes as Scholars of Distinction. The Scholars of Distinction program recognizes student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3.9 or higher through the first semester of 2022-23 academic year.

“Our coaching staff continues to be proud of the discipline and effort our student-athletes show in the classroom and with their studies,” said Jen Foster, head coach for field hockey. “Balancing our practice and game schedule can be demanding in season, but our program continues to put academics as a priority, because success first needs to happen in the classroom.”

Pell Center conversation will discuss role of United Nations in international conflicts

The Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy will host a conversation with Pernilla Rydén, director of The International Forum for the Challenges of Peace Operations and former senior political affairs officer for the United Nations. The conversation will happen on Thursday, March 9, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., in the Bazarsky Lecture Hall in O’Hare Academic Building. Salve Regina members and the general public are invited to participate. To register for this event, go here. 

The world is on fire. From Latin America all the way to Asia, countries everywhere are struggling with violent conflicts, internal instability and political unrest while facing new threats like climate change and misinformation. The international community is struggling to find solutions to these complex issues. With significant polarization across borders: where does the United Nations stand?  

Join the conversation to discuss hopes and concerns for the stability of the world. This discussion will focus on the current state of affairs, and it will also look ahead to the future of U.N. peace operations and the important role of a tricky multilateral system. 

Pernilla Rydén serves as the director of the Challenges Forum International Secretariat. She has extensive experience working with peace and security over the last 20 years. These experiences include numerous U.N. peace operations, the Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Great Lakes, the Swedish embassy, the European External Action Services (EEAS) and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

Most recently, Rydén held the position as chief of staff of the U.N. mission to support the Hudaydah Agreement (UNMHA) in Yemen, where she delivered on the relevant parts of the Stockholm Agreement. Rydén holds a master’s degree in political science and economics from the University of Lund in Sweden.

Staff Advisory Council to host staff assembly, continental breakfast

The Staff Advisory Council (SAC) is eager to continue efforts to foster effective communication, enhance the quality of the staff experience, increase engagement and community, and recognize the contributions made by staff at Salve Regina throughout the year.

SAC will host its spring staff assembly at 9 a.m. on Thursday, March 9, in the Bazarsky Lecture Hall. SAC is also inviting staff to join their colleagues from 8 a.m to 9 a.m. for coffee and a continental breakfast before the assembly.

There is also an option to attend through Webex. Please email staffadvisory@salve.edu or go to the Staff Advisory Council’s Campus Portal page for information about the Webex meeting link and access code.

Agenda items for the open portion of the assembly will include:

  • A review of the past year and updates from the subcommittees.
  • Upcoming initiatives and opportunities for staff to engage.
  • Recognition of SAC members who have completed their term and introduction of new members.
  • Updates from Michael Grandchamp, vice president for operations and chief financial officer.
  • Poll Everywhere.

The Staff Advisory Council encourages all staff to come by before the assembly to say hello, take part in the continental breakfast and stay for the assembly. Following the first portion of the assembly, which is open to all within the Salve Regina community, SAC will move into executive session, which is intended for non-senior level employees to check in candidly.

Sophomores, juniors encouraged to apply for Compass Summer pilot program

Salve Regina is seeking sophomore and junior applicants for the Compass Summer pilot program, which will be held during the upcoming summer of 2023.

The Compass Summer pilot program is an exciting new initiative that is part of the overall Salve Signature Experience — officially dubbed the Salve Compass program — that will be an important part of the University’s overall educational experience moving forward.

Part of Salve the Compass program, the Compass Summer is a project-based, immersive and hands-on experience where students will take a lead role in their learning. Led by Salve Regina’s faculty, these Compass Summer projects have been designed for participants to work in a collaborative team setting to tackle a critical concern facing the world.

Participation in a Compass Summer program will provide Salve Regina students with opportunities and skillsets that will foster tangible experience that will foster career readiness after graduation.

All selected participants will be expected to attend one workshop in April, and the date for these will be forthcoming. In addition, participants will be asked to to complete pre- and post-program assessments.

There are no additional costs associated with participating in a Compass Summer pilot for summer 2023. All housing, meals, and supplies will be provided.

Mercy Mondays: Faculty, staff invited to attend inaugural Living Mercy Retreat at beautiful seaside location

The Office of Mission Integration invites Salve Regina’s faculty and staff to register for the inaugural Living Mercy Retreat, which will be held Sunday, June 4, through Tuesday, June 6.

This multi-day retreat will give Salve Regina’s faculty and staff the opportunity to share in mindful reflection, prayer, dialogue and community and to explore the charism of mercy within their leadership, teaching and service.

The retreat will take place at Mercy by the Sea Retreat and Conference Center in Madison, Connecticut, approximately 90 minutes from Salve Regina. This oasis is rooted in the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy and located on 33 acres along the Long Island Sound, with ample beachfront, a labyrinth, a short woodland trail and a small-forested wetland area.

Individual rooms will be provided for each participant, and twenty fully funded spots are available for Salve Regina faculty and staff.

The retreat will be facilitated by Sister Sheila Carney, RSM, with a leadership team of Salve Regina faculty and staff. Sister Sheila is special assistant to the president for Mercy Heritage at Carlow University in Pittsburgh, and vice-postulator for the cause for canonization for Catherine McAuley in the Americas.

This inaugural faculty and staff Living Mercy Retreat is made possible through the Professional Development Grant awarded to Salve Regina University from the Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education (NetVUE) and is co-sponsored by Salve Regina’s Center for Teaching and Learning.

Caitlin Poplawski ’09 becomes Newport police department’s first LGBTQ+ liaison

Caitlin Poplawski ’09 recently became the City of Newport police department’s first official LGBTQ+ liaison. With this position, Poplawski aims to ensure that the LGBTQ+ community feels safe in the City of Newport, especially when they need help.

This job is a culmination of a dream Poplawski had for many years of being a police officer and truly helping those in need.

Choosing Salve Regina

Caitlin Poplawski, who grew up in New Britain, Connecticut, loved to go to the beach, and the location of Newport, Rhode Island, had always really stuck out to her.

Poplawski had visited the area multiple times, but she remembers one particular moment when it finally clicked for her that she wanted Newport to be her new home — and to attend Salve Regina. It happened during one of the famous St. Patrick’s Day Parades, which are hosted yearly in downtown Newport.

“I came down for the parade, and it was snowing,” explained Poplawski. “It was so beautiful, and I was like, ‘I love it here.'”

During her time at Salve Regina, Poplawski majored in criminal justice and criminology with a minor in psychology. She also played intramural basketball and was a member of the women’s softball team for all four years of her undergraduate career.

Vincent Petrarca, senior lecturer in the department of criminal justice and criminology, stands out to Poplawski as an important influence during her time at Salve Regina.

“He was so great, and he helped me with what I wanted to do with my career,” said Poplawski. “He was always an advocate for me and has been a good resource I could reach out to with any questions.”

Becoming Newport’s first LGTBQ+ liaison

Towards the end of her Salve Regina career, Poplawski knew that she really wanted to be a police officer. However, she didn’t feel quite ready for it and decided to work at a physical therapy clinic in Middletown, Rhode Island after graduation. During her four years there, police officers would frequent the office for various ailments, and Poplawski would talk to them about her Salve Regina undergraduate degree. Eventually, these officers encouraged her to go for it.

Poplawski went on to graduate from the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy and became a patrol officer. As a newbie, she worked the late watch, then moved to the early watch for a couple of years. After that, Poplawski was promoted to the accreditation office and was promoted again to being a detective in the juvenile division.

During her time in this detective position, Newport Out, an organization that aims to make Newport an inviting place for those in the LGTBQ+ community, reached out to Poplawski and asked if she wanted to be a resource at the department. Poplawski had many conversations and meetings with the community policing unit about what this position could look.

“There’s no written rule of what this can or does entail,” explained Poplawski. “I’m just trying to be a resource for whoever needs police assistance and isn’t comfortable talking to officers in a uniform.”

Poplawski is excited to make this into something that can help people. She is also aware of some reservations the LGTBQ+ community has with police officers because of difficult historical issues.

“I hope I can show that although we wear a uniform, we are all human beings,” said Poplawski. “We all want to help people, which is why we became police officers.”

In the future, Poplawski hopes to see other departments get liaisons for other marginalized communities. Community-oriented policing is at the top of Newport’s list, according to Poplawski.

“If I help even one person, that’s great,” reflected Poplawski. “And if I can help even more people be comfortable walking into the police station … without judgment, then that is the ultimate goal.”

Applications for undergraduate scholarships now open for fall 2023

Between now and Friday, March 31, all rising sophomores, juniors and seniors who will be returning for the 2023-24 academic year are encouraged to apply for a variety of scholarships.

The Salve Regina Endowed Scholarships are based on a wide criteria — from different majors and interests to community service and personal triumphs. Many of the Salve Regina scholarships were created by the generous alumni, families and friends of the University to help benefit students so that they can continue their success while here.

Students are encouraged to explore the scholarship application, which lists different criteria and descriptions of available scholarships. If anyone has questions, please reach out to the Office of Financial Aid at (401) 341-2901. Students can also find a variety of information on the office’s website.

Scholarship notifications will be sent in May 2023 and will appear on students’ 2023-24 financial aid offers.

Pell Center lecture on American democracy, Ukraine moved to March 7

Max Boot, a New York Times bestselling author and Pulitzer Prize finalist, will be giving a lecture hosted by the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy. The lecture, entitled “Risks to American Democracy,” will be held on Tuesday, March, at 7 p.m. in the Bazarsky Lecture Hall in O’Hare Academic Building.

This lecture is open to the Salve Regina community, as well as the public. To register, go here.  

Over the last two years, the battle for democracy has raged from the steps of the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., to the streets of Kiev, Ukraine. National security columnist and historian Max Boot explores this moment in human history and offers insights about the health of the American republic and path forward in Ukraine.

Boot is a New York Times bestselling author and Pulitzer Prize finalist for “The Road Not Taken: Edward Lansdale and the American Tragedy in Vietnam.” He has also written multiple other highly acclaimed boots, and he is currently writing his second biography, which will be focusing on Ronald Reagan. Boot is also a senior fellow for national security studies for the Council on Foreign Relations and a columnist for The Washington Post.

Before these roles, Boot was a foreign policy analyst with CNN and has made appearances on numerous television and radio programs. For his work as an analyst, he has been recognized by the International Institute for Strategic Studies as the world’s leading authority on armed conflict. 

Boot holds a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of California, Berkeley and a master’s degree in history from Yale University. 

This event is in partnership with Salve Regina University John E. McGinty Fund in History; the Office of Multicultural Programs and Retention; the cultural, environmental and global studies program; the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies; and the League of Women Voters of Newport County.
