Three Salve Regina men’s soccer players are named to All-Region teams
Teryn O'Brien Posted On January 4, 2023

United Soccer Coaches announced their All-Region teams for the 2022 season, and three members of the Salve Regina men’s soccer team were among the honorees.

Evan Arpin ’24 and Jordan Borges ’24 were each named first team All-CCC this past season, while Ben Tomas ’26 was named second team All-CCC.

“I am absolutely elated to see each of these young men be named to the All-Region teams, as they are all truly gifted players,” said Craig O’Rourke II, head coach for men’s soccer. “Having all three of these guys back with us next year will help ease our transition into NEWMAC and keep us playing the brand of soccer that Salve Regina men’s soccer has become synonymous with.”

Jordan has been a dominant attacking threat for Salve Regina ever since he arrived on-campus in 2020, according to O’Rourke. This year Jordan had to perform the dual role of play-maker and finisher and find a way to balance his ability to get forward with his commitment to the defensive shape and line of engagement.

Aprin settled into his more traditional position of centerback after having played the majority of the 2021 season on the width at a more attacking role. According to O’Rourke, Arpin even stepped out of his centerback shackles and committed himself to getting forward in helping to create several absolutely golden scoring opportunities for Salve Regina late in the season.

“Ben Tomas joining us this season and playing himself into that deep-lying central midfield role just absolutely helped to solidify our overall midfield shape and helped us to dominate the ball and play up the field as well as change our point of attack quickly and efficiently,” concluded O’Rourke.

Salve Regina builds memorial for victims of gun violence, encourages action
Teryn O'Brien Posted On June 3, 2022

Salve Regina held a special mass on Wednesday, June 1, that honored the lives lost to gun violence at Robb Elementary School in Texas, Tops Friendly Market in New York, the Irvine Taiwanese Presbyterian Church in California and the Natalie Medical Building in Oklahoma.

As a follow up to this mass, the Mercy Center for Spiritual Life and the Center for Community Engagement and Service will be building visible memorials to those who have been killed in the multiple shootings over the past few weeks.

One large cross encircled by 36 smaller crosses will be on the grounds of Our Lady of Mercy Chapel. The symbolism of these crosses indicates that the suffering of others in society is the suffering of Christ. The Mercy Center for Spiritual Life invites all to come and offer a prayer, complete a moment of silence and reflect about the lives lost.

The Center for Community Engagement and Service will also have memorial signs of all those killed in these shootings within the chapel. The center will also display lanterns with the names of those who have been killed in the recent shootings in the shape of a heart on the lawn outside of McKillop Library and Gerety Hall.

The crosses and lanterns will be displayed over Reunion Weekend on Friday, June 3, through Sunday, June 5.

Future memorials and awareness gardens are being designed and planned to be a constant reminder of our responsibilities to each other, to the common good and to the mercy mission. Let this be a moment of action for the Salve Regina community, bidding a movement forward toward nonviolence and action to end gun violence in America.

A Prayer from Salve Regina

God of Mercy,
No.
We can’t bear it.

Give us the strength,
Give us the courage,
Give us the fortitude.

We must act.
Children dead.
Shoppers dead.
Teachers dead.
Churchgoers dead.

Our hearts ache.
Our children are bewildered.
Our country wrenches.

Move us to act.
Move us from No
To Yes.

Move our hearts.
Move our power.
Move our privilege.
Move our humanity.

Embrace all who grieve.
Embrace all who mourn.
Embrace all who turn away.

God of mercy,
Have mercy on us.
Move us to act.

Yes.

Amen.

Prayer offered by Dr. Theresa Ladrigan-Whelpley, vice president for mission integration

Salve Regina to host in-person Reunion Weekend, a lineup of events for alumni
Teryn O'Brien Posted On May 17, 2022

The Office of Alumni, Parent and Family Programs is hosting its annual Reunion Weekend on Friday, June 3 through Sunday, June 5. From morning sails to nights on the town to special meals, Salve Regina alumni can look forward to an exciting and unique experience in Newport, Rhode Island, to commemorate their reunion. To register for Reunion Weekend, go here. The deadline to register is Sunday, May 22.

“In 2020, we celebrated with virtual reunion gatherings through video calls. In 2021, we brought Reunion Weekend online to the alumni’s home through celebration kits,” said Gillian Goodrich, assistant director for the Office of Alumni, Parent and Family programs. “The year 2022 is the year we are reuniting in person.”

Unlike the past couple of years, alumni and their guests are welcome to stay in campus dorms to get the full Reunion Weekend experience, and there will be opportunities for them to explore all of campus and immerse themselves in Salve Regina.

New events include an added State of the University event where Dr. Kelli J. Armstrong, president of the University, will be in attendance to answer questions and give updates on the exciting direction in which Salve Regina is headed. Many of Salve Regina’s alumni haven’t had the opportunity to come back to campus at all since they graduated, so there will also be a campus tour led by student ambassadors. Additionally, Fr. Scott Pontes, a chaplain at Salve Regina, is hosting an open house for the Mercy Center for Spiritual Life for those who haven’t had the pleasure of becoming acquainted with the chapel since its erection in 2010.

On Saturday, June 4, there will be an all-class Lobster Bake filled with traditional Newport fixings prepared by local seafood legend McGrath Clambakes. To top the night off, there will be a live band and a chance to dance the night away. A list of all Reunion Weekend events can be found here.

“I know for myself, this is the first year I’ll be able to celebrate Reunion Weekend in person,” said Goodrich. “It’s so exciting to have the anticipation of friends coming together to reminisce about their college days, being able to bring their family to show them around and celebrating everything our alumni have accomplished since they’ve graduated. Their relationship with Salve has only deepened since graduation.”

Reunion Weekend has been a tradition at Salve Regina for decades. Back in the 1950s there were two groups of current students’ parents, Ladies Guild and the Father’s Club, that helped organize programs, activities and dances for students. Eventually, as Salve Regina graduated more and more students, these graduates joined the ranks of the Ladies Guild, which developed into Salve Regina’s original alumni association.

During the 1960s, the Ladies Guild continued to be very active with programming events for students, and it eventually produced the first campus events for alumni – including the first alumni weekends. These later on became known as Reunion Weekends.

“Of note was an interesting event the Ladies Guild put on in the late 1950s – a book signing in Ochre Court for a new author who had just written a book called ‘Profiles in Courage,’ ” said Gerry Willis, director of the Office of Alumni, Parent and Family programs. “The author was John F. Kennedy.”

To register for Reunion Weekend, go here. Deadline to register is Sunday, May 22.
