Baseball wins 12 All-CCC selections, Coach of the Year, Rookie of the Year to cap historic season
The Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) recently announced its 2023 Baseball All-Conference Teams and major award winners.
Following a historically successful regular season and finishing second in the conference standings, the Seahawks finished second in the Misericordia regional tournament after suffering a defeat to the regional hosts.
There was much to be proud of this season for the Seahawks squad, starting with the fact that several records were broken. Primarily, the Seahawks posted 38 program wins, ranking No. 1 all-time in Salve Regina baseball history. Many players had outstanding seasons, some of them their first and some of them their final.
Eric Cirella earned his second career Coach of the Year honors after leading Salve Regina to the conference championship against the EC Gulls and to the Misericordia Regional Final against the hosts.
In the CCC, the Seahawks were best in runs scored at 450, a batting average of .335 and an on-base percentage of .432. Cirella led the Seahawks to a nationwide-best 7.06 hits allowed per nine innings, a third-best Ks per nine with 10.7, as well as a 13th-best team ERA of 3.47 nationwide.
Sean Mulligan ’26, who earned Rookie of the Year, appeared in 16 games, and just seven of those were starts.
In his first collegiate start against Springfield, Mulligan contributed to a combined no-hitter down in Auburndale, Florida, in early March, which were early signs of another weapon in an already deep arsenal.
In his second start, the freshman pitched five shutout innings, allowing one hit in his first collegiate win against conference foe Roger Williams University. Mulligan then started against Keystone in the opening round of the Misericordia Regional where the Seahawks won 10-0. Mulligan ranked third in the CCC with an ERA of 2.91.
Twelve Seahwaks in total made it onto the All-CCC Teams.
All-CCC First Team ward winners were Jason Arrigo ’25, Brayden Clark ’24, Matt D’Amato ’23, and Christian Homa ’25.
All-CCC’s Second Team boasted Mike Breen ’24, Graham Jeffries ’23, Mulligan mentioned above, Tyler Petrosino ’24 and Dustin Siqueira ’23.
Nick Callano ’25, Tyler Cannoe ’23 and Brandon Glover ’24 made the All-CCC Third Team.
Voting for the All-CCC Teams and major awards was conducted by the nine CCC head baseball coaches following the conclusion of the regular season and do not take postseason play into consideration.
