Fun Fridays: Virtual games to play with friends near and far
Article by Emily Whelan ’20
Game nights with your friends might seem like a thing of the past, but they don’t have to be! With Facetime, Zoom and all of the different video conferencing platforms, it is still possible to play some of your favorite games together from miles away. Social distancing cannot take away all of the fun.
#1: Try out online board game arena Tabletopia
If you’re a board game fanatic, check out www.tabletopia.com. The website allows you to play over 800 board games for free with a friend or with anyone in the world. All you have to do is create an account and get started! The games include classics such as backgammon and chess and brand-new ones to try out, too.
#2: Use the random trivia generator
Make the next group Facetime call more exciting by playing trivia with your friends. Split into teams and test one another’s knowledge using this random trivia generator. You can pick a category for the round and a name for your team. Expand your knowledge in a fun way!
#3: Play Head’s Up on your phone
Head’s Up was created by Ellen DeGeneres in 2014 and has become one of the most popular games since. It’s simple – first you pick a category such as celebrities, movies or accents. Then, hold your phone above your head and have everyone describe what’s listed on the card (without saying the actual word). The game can be played with people in the same room or through Facetime or Zoom. It is sure to create a lot of laughs!
#4: Forget virtual!
Speaking of older games, it’s the perfect time to break out the old Wii games from middle school. Battle your siblings in Guitar Hero or Mario Kart to relive younger memories. Or if video games aren’t your thing, plan a family game night where you can play all of your old favorites such as Monopoly, Life, Uno or Sorry. There are so many ways to have some fun until this remote time is over!
Each Friday, SALVEtoday will provide fun ideas and experiences to encourage and uplift the University community during this time of remote living and learning. #salvesgotthis #funfridays
