LGBTQ+ Center celebrates second annual Coming Out Week
Salve Regina’s LGBTQ+ Center opened during the 2021-22 academic year as a physical space for LGBTQ+ students and their allies to foster community. The center’s goal is to spur on existing efforts to create campus events and educational opportunities to celebrate Salve Regina’s mercy mission through its diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.
With this in mind, the LGBTQ+ Center is celebrating its second annual Coming Out Week and offering a variety of events to honor National Coming Out Day on Wednesday, Oct. 11.
Below is a list of Coming Out Week events.
Door of Acceptance with Alliance
Tuesday, Oct. 10, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Gerety Hall lawn
Rain location: O’Hare Academic Building
Walk through the Door of Acceptance to show your support and allyship of the LGBTQ+ community! This event is hosted by Salve’s Alliance Club, which provides a safe, supportive place for LGBTQ+ students and allies to support each other, partake in social activities and create a platform for activism.
National Coming Out Day Celebration
Wednesday, Oct. 11, Noon – 3 p.m.
Gerety Hall lawn
Rain location: Gerety Hall
Celebrate friends no matter where they are in their coming out journey. There will be a giant rainbow swing for photo ops, DIY pride bead jewelry, an LGBTQ+ resources fair, the Friskie Fries food truck, lawn games and music.
CAB Things for Thursday: Tote Bags & Tie-Dye
Thursday, Oct. 12, Noon – 3 p.m.
Gerety Hall lawn
Come make DIY tie-dye tote bags and more.
Movie Screening: Rocky Horror Picture Show
Friday, Oct. 13, 7:30 p.m.
O’Hare Academic Building, Bazarsky Lecture Hall
Celebrate Friday the 13th with the cult classic and all of the fun interactive elements that go along with the movie. Costumes, singing and dancing are encouraged.
Drag on the Lawn
Saturday, Oct. 14
Doors open: 6 p.m.
Meet & Greet: 6:30 – 7 p.m.
Show: 7 – 8 p.m.
Gerety Hall lawn
Rain location: O’Hare Academic Building, Bazarsky Lecture Hall
Three local Rhode Island drag queens will perform on Gerety Hall lawn. Dress warm and bring blankets or beach chairs for full cozy picnic vibes.
