Men’s rugby team pursuing undefeated season
With a 6-0 record and just two games left in the regular season, the men’s rugby team is looking to finish undefeated and remain atop the standings in the Colonial Coast Rugby Conference.
The team has a bye this weekend and will close out the season with two away games: Saturday, Oct. 31 at Massachusetts Maritime Academy and Friday, Nov. 6 at Wheaton College.
At the end of the season, the team in first place is named the conference champion and moves on to the playoffs, with the chance to advance to the Division II national championships.
“Our team has experienced tremendous success this year thanks to our new coach, younger players stepping up and the overarching atmosphere that the group as a whole creates,” said captain Alex DiMauro ’16. “But we are nowhere near finished. There is much more work to do and areas for improvement, as we are in the midst of playing some serious competition very soon.”
Currently, the team’s top scorers include Zach Mehuren ’15 (five tries, 21 conversions, one penalty kick, 70 points), DiMauro (13 tries, 65 points) and Jamie Horoszko ’17 (six tries, 30 points).
DiMauro encourages members of the Salve Regina community to support the rugby team by following their Facebook page to learn more about upcoming games, events and fundraisers, or simply asking players about their upcoming games.
“Rugby, while it is growing more and more in the U.S., is not very well known and it is pretty foreign to people,” DiMauro said. “Personally, I love explaining the game to people because it is such a different concept, as well as the camaraderie that exists in the game largely due to the physicality and mental components of the game.”
