Music program plans Christmas and holiday concerts
The music program has several Christmas and holiday concerts on tap, including performances from the University’s choral groups along with the Newport Community Symphonic Band and the Newport County Orchestra.
Admission to all concerts is $8 for general, $5 for students and senior citizens and free for Salve Regina students, faculty and staff with a University ID. Tickets are available in advance and may be reserved by calling (401) 341-2295.
The Newport County Orchestra, directed by Vincent Mattera, will perform at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6 in the Casino Theatre. The orchestra is composed of Salve Regina students, members of the local community and advanced high school students. The program will feature the music of Ludwig van Beethoven, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Johann Strauss and Ralph Vaughan Williams, as well as other holiday music.
The Newport Community Symphonic Band, directed by Peter Davis, will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7 in the Casino Theatre. The program will include “A Christmas Festival” by Leroy Anderson, music by the flute ensemble, and selections from Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s version of the “Nutcracker Suite.”
The University’s choral groups, directed by Don St. Jean, will perform at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12 and Saturday, Dec. 13 in Ochre Court. Featuring the University Chorus, Madrigals, men’s and women’s a cappella groups and student soloists, the concerts will include a variety of holiday classics, such as the “Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s “Messiah” along with the works of Joseph Haydn, Johann Sebastian Bach, Healey Willan and more. The featured work will be “Christmas Oratorio” by Camille Saint-Saens.
