Pell Center holding auditions for “Ajax”
Members of the Salve Regina community and the general public are invited to audition for the Pell Center’s production of Sophocles’ “Ajax,” which will be performed statewide this November.
Auditions will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15 and Tuesday, Sept. 16 in the Young Building ballroom. Those wishing to audition should bring a recent headshot and a resume.
Made possible by grants from the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities, the production will bring together recent veterans, future soldiers, faculty and students to explore the emotional trauma of war.
Performances will build upon a long tradition of “activist performance” in the theater that views storytelling as a positive force for social change. The production is using a contemporary translation by James Scully, who will join the effort to see his work performed live on stage for the first time in New England.
The following performances are confirmed, with one or two additional dates to be determined:
- 7 p.m. Nov. 11-13 at Salve Regina’s Megley Theatre
- 2 p.m. Nov. 15 at the Contemporary Theater Company in Wakefield
- 7 p.m. Nov. 17 at Providence College’s Bowab Studio Theater
- 7 p.m. Nov. 18 at Sandywoods Center for the Arts in Tiverton
Cast and crew must be available for all performances, and cast members will receive a $500 stipend. Rehearsals will begin in late September.
