Percussive dance group Step Afrika! to perform in Casino Theatre
The high-energy dancers of Step Afrika!, the first professional company dedicated to the tradition of stepping, will perform at 9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15 in the Casino Theatre. Sponsored by the Office of Student Activities, the performance is free and open to the public.
Since its founding in 1994, Step Afrika! has graced some of America’s most prestigious stages, from the White House to the Lincoln Center in New York City. They have also performed throughout North and South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Caribbean.
The company blends percussive dance styles practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities, African traditional dance and influences from a variety of other dance and art forms. Performances are much more than dance shows; they integrate songs, storytelling, humor and audience participation.
The Office of Student Activities will provide free bus transportation for Salve Regina students. Buses will leave the Rodgers Recreation Center at 8:40 p.m. and drop off after the performance. For more information, call (401) 341-2915.
