Salve Spirit Days foster University pride on campus
By Matthew Levine ’17
In an effort to foster school spirit at Salve Regina, the offices of Athletics, Residence Life and Student Activities have initiated a Salve Spirit Day campaign. Every Wednesday, students are encouraged to wear Salve apparel or the colors blue, white and green that are familiar with the University.
Jennifer Rosa, assistant director of residence life, has been an avid supporter of the movement. “I was happy to join the campaign to increase school spirit since I try and attend any and all Salve sporting events that I can,” she said. “Go Seahawks!”
Rosa encouraged students to utilize the hashtags #onwednesdayswewearsalve, #salvepride, #seahawkprideliveshere and #seahawkssupportingseahawks when attending sporting events or posting pictures online.
Salve Spirit Day is an attempt to raise Salve Regina pride on campus because many students choose to wear apparel from other schools. Michelle Kaparis ’18, an English literature and secondary education double major, introduced the slogan “On Wednesdays We Wear Salve” to accompany the campaign.
“I definitely think that school spirit is something that Salve is lacking,” said Kaparis, who is also a Resident Advisor. “I think that by wearing Salve gear and supporting our sports teams, morale around campus could definitely improve.” Kaparis also said that once people spread the word about Salve Spirit Day, she hopes to see more Seahawk logos on the sidewalks.
Salve swag is always available in the bookstore, located in the garden level of Miley Hall. This week, the bookstore is having a sale on Wednesday, Oct. 19 and Thursday, Oct. 20. Shoppers will receive a 25 percent discount on a number of items, including sweatshirts and sweatpants (excluding Nike), T-shirts and Columbia and Cutter & Buck polos, as well as an additional 25 percent off all clearance.
