Short-term study abroad programs set for summer 2017

Salve Regina faculty will lead students to all corners of the globe this summer through short-term study abroad opportunities offered by the Office of International Programs. These popular programs combine academics with hands-on learning, cultural engagement and exploration.

New Zealand: Mid-May to Mid-June, 2017
BIO399: Human and Geographic Impacts on Flora and Fauna in New Zealand and/or GLO399: The Culture of New Zealand: Past, Present and Future, both with Dr. JD Swanson

This program will provide first-hand experiences of the impact humans can have on the native flora and fauna in the diverse geographic landscape of the world’s youngest nation. Students will learn through continuous discussion and instruction from the primary instructor, along with lectures from professionals throughout New Zealand. They will survey the natural flora and fauna of New Zealand, try to identify its respective geographies, and discuss the impacts of the geography and human influences on the flora and fauna and its relation to this genetic diversity.

This program offers two tracks – one for nursing majors and one open to all majors – built around overseas experiences and a shared focus on social justice. For all participants, the program is linked to the context of Ireland with a special focus on The Troubles, peace building and political and economic justice issues. Health care and quality of life issues will be used as case studies to explore these issues further and community engagement activities will be cultivated so that students and faculty can contribute to the public good.
Oxford: May 27 to June 24, 2017
ENG324/PELL299: The Literature of Oxford with Dr. Stephen Trainor

This program allows students to earn six credits by choosing two courses from a variety of offerings taught by faculty from Salve Regina, St. Clare’s College and Oxford University. The program emphasizes experiential learning, with almost daily trips to Oxford sites such as Port Meadow, Christ Church College and the Eagle and Child pub. Ranging beyond the city and the university, students will travel to London and Bath and will take in a play at an exact replica of the Globe Theater, experiencing drama as it was enjoyed in Shakespeare’s day.
Dominican Republic: June 1 to July 31, 2017
Courses: Culture and Society of the Hispanic Caribbean and Service Learning

This program is intended for – but not limited to – administration of justice, health care administration and management, nursing and social work majors seeking to develop their Spanish language skills and knowledge of the cultures of the Hispanic Caribbean. Students will complete two courses while living with families, enabling them to augment their Spanish skills while enriching the cultural knowledge they gain in the classroom through first-hand experience. Placements will be based on major so that students can participate in an authentic work environment while using and developing their Spanish.
