Spring 2024’s Multicultural Education Week brings exciting lineup of speakers and events
Multicultural Education Week (MEW) takes place every semester at Salve Regina as an opportunity to bring up topics around diversity, equity and inclusion — and this spring 2024’s lineup of events offers a variety of speakers, panel discussions and performances to highlight such important issues. The week will run Sunday, Feb. 25, through Friday, March 1.
Below is the lineup of speakers and events to help students, faculty and staff join in on cross-cultural conversations. All members of the Salve community are encouraged to participate.

Multicultural Mass
Sunday, Feb. 25, 5 p.m.
Our Lady of Mercy Chapel
Start off Multicultural Education Week with the Salve Regina community at a multilingual mass. This mass will feature diverse readings and songs in English, French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese.
Keynote Speaker: Dr. Saaid Mendoza and Experiences as a Mexican Immigrant
Monday, Feb. 26, 7 p.m.
Bazarsky Lecture Hall in O’Hare Academic Building
Dr. Mendoza will draw from his scholarly work and lived experiences as a Mexican immigrant to discuss the power of allyship. His inclusive approach will leave audience members feeling more confident in their knowledge, comfortable discussing challenging topics and committed to their own DEI journey.
Speaker: Dr. Joshua Bennett and The Life of Spoken Word
Tuesday, Feb. 27, 7 p.m.
Bazarsky Lecture Hall in O’Hare Academic Building
In this powerful presentation, MIT professor and award-winning author Dr. Joshua Bennett shares selections from his most recent book — “Spoken Word: A Cultural History” — alongside original poems, as well as his reflections on the art of storytelling and his individual journey as a writer and educator.
Performer: Panel Discussion on Combating Hate at Salve
Wednesday, Feb. 28, 7 p.m.
Bazarsky Lecture Hall in O’Hare Academic Building
A panel discussion comprised of faculty, staff and students of Salve Regina will invite the community to reflect and dialogue around the topic of hate. Why do we hate? How does it affect us as individuals and as a community? And most importantly, how do we combat hate? Community partners and organizations will join the conversation, bringing statistical data and recommendations to make Salve more inclusive.
Thursday Tea Time
Thursday, Feb. 29, Noon – 2 p.m.

Thursday Tea Time is where attendees will find the best treats for the day with desserts and tea from around the world. This chai time is not to be missed, as the origin and story behind tea will also be discussed. To remain inclusive to our non-tea drinkers in the community, there will also be a pop-up coffee hour.
Multicultural Festival Celebrates Asia
Friday, March 1, 7-11 p.m.
Ochre Court
Join the Salve Regina community for a night of cultural exploration and enjoy the cuisine of Asia. Let the Salve community come together for a night of warmth, celebration and acceptance. A show will be showcasing some hidden Salve talents and community performances.
