Teenage musicians are invited to attend the Newport Jazz Summer Camp
For any teenage musicians ages 14-18 who are looking to refine their musical abilities, the Newport Jazz Summer Camp at Salve Regina is an exciting new partnership with the Newport Jazz Festival that will be held on Sunday, July 30, through Saturday, August 5.
“We have been offering a jazz camp in recent years, but the partnership enables us to have the camp coincide with Newport Jazz Festival events,” said Peter Davis, senior lecturer in the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance. “The partnership will bring a level of distinction which will bring more attention to Salve Regina, which has been developing significant offerings in jazz education and performance over recent years.”
This week-long summer camp, students will learn from experienced music educators and festival artists, and they will also experience a guest appearance from Christian McBride, artistic director of the Newport Jazz Festival.
“The biggest piece of this for the students is the opportunity to actually perform at the Newport Jazz Festival,” said Davis. “Campers will be on hand in Newport working with our faculty and students in a performance intensive atmosphere. They also have the opportunity to meet and talk with artists from the festival, which will provide them with invaluable first-hand experience and anecdotes from the artists themselves.”
Financial assistance opportunities are available.
Last-minute spots are available, but participants are encouraged to apply as promptly as possible. A placement audition recording and full tuition must accompany all applications.
