Terio sets Division III record for interception returns
Phil Terio ’15 has set an NCAA Division III football single season record by recording four interceptions returned for a touchdown this year. Terio set the record last weekend, picking off a fourth quarter pass and returning it 68 yards for a score during Salve Regina’s 57-21 victory over UMass Dartmouth. It marked the third consecutive game in which Terio has recorded a pick-six.
With at least four more games remaining, Terio has already compiled interception returns of 31, 52, 68 and 88 yards and leads the Seahawks in scoring as strictly a defensive and special teams player. In addition to his four touchdowns off interceptions, he has added a 45-yard punt return for a touchdown, giving him a total of five touchdowns on the year.
At this point in the year, the defensive back has compiled 33 tackles, five interceptions, four pass breakups, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery, helping Salve Regina to an undefeated 6-0 record, a No. 1 ranking in the region and as high as a No. 30 ranking in the nation.
