On Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 4 p.m. the Inclusive Reading Club (IRC) will be facilitated by Dr. Tony Affigne, professor of political science at Providence College. In addition to facilitating the IRC club, Dr. Affigne will be hosting a Brown Bag Discussion event where he will talk about for activism and social change on Wednesday, Oct. 19, from 1-2 p.m. on the first floor of McKillop Library. People are encouraged to bring lunch and join him for the discussion. No registration is required.
Latinos represent about 17 percent of the nation’s population, yet they remain largely underrepresented in political and appointed office, with Hispanic women being much less likely than men to serve in public office. Yet despite many challenges facing Latinas, Rhode Island’s cohort of Hispanic elected officials is majority female.
The IRC will discuss what elements contribute to the Hispanic officials and why specifically in Rhode Island they are successful. Dr. Affigne will share his insights based on research of the women’s achieving and exercising power, and how Rhode Island’s environment and opportunities led to their success. People are also encouraged to share their own thoughts on the IRC’s online bulletin board. The bulletin board also contains all the readings for the meeting.
Dr. Affigne has been a member of the American Political Science Association for more than three decades and was principal founder of the political science subfield on race, ethnicity and politics, established in 1995. His research on Latino, Black, and Asian American politics, environmental parties and policy, and the early history of political science, has been published in the U.S. and abroad.
The mission of the Inclusive Reading Club is to engage members of the Salve Regina community in exploring issues of diversity and multiculturalism through short readings and discussions. The IRC provides an inclusive environment that encourages participants to develop a greater understanding and appreciation of different identities, cultures and communities.
The next IRC event will be available both online and in-person on the second floor of McKillop Library on Wednesday, Oct. 19, from 4-5 p.m. To register for the event, go here.
